Editor of the Year and double recipient of Magazine of the Year Awards for his ground-breaking, New Zealand-based popular culture magazine Pavement (1993-2007), Barney McDonald has been writing magazine features, stories and reviews for decades – ever since producing two Joy Division/New Order fanzines as a teenager. Since then he’s interviewed nearly everybody: Peter Jackson, Gary Oldman, Placebo, Liv Tyler, Coldplay, Dita von Teese, Russell Crowe, Anna Paquin and his beloved New Order, to name a few.
Pop culture – film, television, music, design, photography, art – flows through Barney’s veins, and incisive interview technique and compelling feature writing are very close to his heart. He’s written for other local mags including Rip It Up, Canvas, Black, 1AM, Groove Guide, Stamp, Style and TV Guide, overseas mags i-D (London), Issue (LA), Mini International (Germany), Gulliver (Italy), Jetstar (Singapore), Oyster (Sydney), Australian Style and Australian Vogue. He’s also an experienced newspaper journalist and film reviewer (Herald On Sunday, Sunday Star Times), copywriter (Heineken Live), DJ, club promoter and traveler.
