Writing Competitions and Events

If you are looking to take your writing to the next level, then entering a writing competition can provide that extra impetus to refine your work.

Below is a short list of competitions. Some writing competitions require an entry fee. Check that you are comfortable with sending money to the organisers. Please contact the competition organisers directly if you have any queries.

NZ Writers College offers a free-to-enter short story competition every year with cash prizes for the winners. We do this to support emerging writers and provide a platform for the genre.

Read the winning entries over the past ten years. The deadline is 30 September each year, and the competition opens for entries in July.
