Testimonials for NZ Writers College 2012

“The course was very good and the material was clear and well-presented. Rosemary was an excellent tutor. She was very friendly and encouraging and my marked assignments were returned to me at exceptional speed! Her responses were always helpful and motivational, and she was always eager to push me to succeed. I achieved excellent results and I have Rosemary to thank for that. I learned a great deal throughout this experience and will be using my new skills as a foundation for further study. I’m quite happy recommending this course  to any writer who seeks to polish their grammar skills.” Craig Wraight, English Grammar for Writers Course, December 2013

“The course was extremely helpful and I learned a lot. Reading now takes on a new dimension. Thinking and analysing the material within the course will definitely benefit my writing. Helen is very knowledgeable and was a great teacher. She provided an even and guiding hand along the path, which I appreciated. I would recommend the course to any person wanting to understand the Basics of Creative Writing. The course material and the tutors are fantastic and I look forward to furthering my writing in the future.” Ralph Giraudeaux, Basics of Creative Writing, December 2013

“The course material was informative and relevant. Helen was a great tutor. Her instructions were clear and her comments helpful. I feel confident that I have strengthened my Creative Writing skills. This is actually my second course through The Writers’ College. I completed (with distinction) the Travel Writing Course under the guidance of Don Pinnock. The  Writers’ College is an excellent resource for individuals who have a passion for writing but just need the extra encouragement and knowledge to pursue their dreams.” Carmen Harrison, Basics of Creative Writing, December 2013

“Completing the course with the Writers’ College has been a positive and helpful experience. I learnt a great deal about Writing a Children’s Book and it was great to be given thoughtful feedback on my writing. Helen helped me cut to the chase and get my story moving. Overall it was a valuable experience.” Sacha Cotter, Write a Children’s Book Course, December 2013

“The course had a very good balance between theory and practice. Ed was very helpful, insightful, motivating and eager to see me succeed. His feedback was honest and constructive and he has remained interested in my progress beyond completion of the course. The course has given me a great platform to practically make a start in the field of Broadcast Journalism.” Roshni Gajjar, Broadcast Journalism Course, December 2013

“The course was very informative; I would love to do another course next year. My tutor was very helpful, she had great knowledge of the subject and she was incredibly thorough. It was definitely a comprehensive course.” Kobus Butler, Copywriting Course, December 2013

“I have learned so much on this course, not just about the tools of writing but about what kind of writer I am and where I want to go with my words. Helen’s guidance on this course, and on the Basics course, has been invaluable in my journey to becoming a writer. I’m going to miss the structure and the hand-holding she afforded. The Writers College and the two courses I have attended have given me the confidence to run with my writing. Thank you so much.”  Michelle Peart, Advanced Creative Writing, December 2013 Enrol for a writing course at NZ Writers' College

“I wanted to learn about the basic ingredients of good creative writing, and I did. I enjoyed the exercises and found Helen’s  feedback incredibly valuable. I’m glad I did the course; it was a good starting point and I feel more confident about the quality of my writing.” Frieda-Marié De Jager, Basics of Creative Writing Course, December 2013

“I enjoyed the course immensely; it was fun and easy to engage with. The modules were well structured and helped steer me in the right direction. Louis provided excellent feedback for all the assessments. It was always of a positive practical nature, to help correct mistakes  and create a better novel. I always looked forward to reading his assessments as I found them really motivational. Without the Write a Novel Course and the feedback from Louis, I would not have had the motivation (or indeed technical skills) to begin writing – even though I’d wanted to write a novel for a long time. The course provided me with a formal and structured approach to writing, something that I now appreciate is essential when starting on that first novel.” Phillip Duff, Write a Novel Course, December 2013

“This course has given me a fantastic ‘taste’ of a career I hadn’t previously considered, and has provided me with some really practical skills and knowledge. Sarah was a fantastic tutor – she provided detailed feedback on all my assignments and was extremely encouraging throughout the course. I have learnt a huge amount from her. She kept in regular contact so I stayed on track but she never rushed me. Being able to work at my own pace and do everything online has made it possible to complete the course while having a demanding full time job. I have learnt a lot about the basics of Magazine Journalism and have produced two articles I’m really proud of.” Kirstin Fisher, Magazine Journalism Course, December 2013

“The course was challenging and I learnt a lot about Copy-editing and Proofreading. The material is thorough and I received feedback very quickly and it was always motivating.” Corrina Coetzer, Copy-editing and Proofreading Course, November 2013

“I learnt much more than just writing short stories. With great mentorship and support I learnt about my strengths and weaknesses in writing. Ginny knows what she’s doing; it was such a privilege to be tutored by her. It was great to be exposed to solid and experienced tutors that deal with the process of writing professionally. Overall, it was excellent!” Michele van Eck, Short Story Writing for Magazines Course, November 2013

“The course was structured perfectly and covered every aspect in the literary world of novel writing. The assignments were easily understood and helpful in developing the tools needed to improve my writing abilities. I enjoyed every moment of the course, and always looked forward to the next assignment. From the very first email received from Alex – I was convinced of her brilliance. All of my assignments were graded within a week, and her following advice and guidance was helpful and encouraging. Due to her endless support, I was able to gain the confidence in my writing and even managed to complete a full first draft of my novel. Alex is not only an inspiration, but a wonderful mentor and someone I would consider, “a dear friend.” Thank you Alex for allowing me the privilege of having shared my journey with you.  It would be difficult to describe this course as an educational tool; the course was so intriguing and captivating, that it felt more like a lifestyle  that you aim to live everyday!” Claire Froneman, Write a Novel Course, November 2013

Thank you so much.” Annalie Sieberhagen, Proofreading and Copy-editing Course, October 2013

“It was an absolute pleasure taking this course. It was very professionally presented and the staff are friendly, helpful and supportive.  My tutor Helen was absolutely amazing. Her insight and suggestions were both helpful and much appreciated. I would definitely recommend SA Writers’ College to anyone who wants to hone their writing skills.” Jana Fourie, Basics of Creative Writing Course, October 2013

“The course really helped to improve my confidence in my ideas and my writing. Before starting the course I was anxious of harsh criticism because I love writing and didn’t want to spoil my enjoyment of it. Helen Brain balanced her constructive criticism perfectly; I felt she respected my writing but also wanted to help me progress. I know that she would have replied to any queries that I had. I wanted to set aside some time for myself to be creative. I feel that the course has allowed me to do this. The course has left me feeling inspired to write. Thank you!” Rebecca Byrne, Basics of Creative Writing Course, October 2013

“The course challenged me;  it entailed not only trying to find something interesting or creative to write about, but also to use my head and apply the techniques learnt. Helen was very helpful and I found her suggestions and comments very positive and motivational instead of critical. It was so refreshing to learn something from a positive, inspiring woman. She relieved my anxiety of trying out something new and made  the “step´´ a very enjoyable and positive experience. I view writing and read books completely differently now,  and I am even more inspired to put stories and experiences on paper. The feedback from the admin department as well as from Helen was always prompt. My experience of The Writers’ College is that it is a reputable institution without being scholastic and rigid. It makes sense to learn from people in the field that have accomplished something and know what they are talking about.” Liezle Eul, Basics of Creative Writing Course, October 2013

[My tutor’s] comments were always fair and communicated in a positive way. The turnaround of results was quick and his explanations clear and to the point. An excellent source of information, education and up-skilling resources for writing professionals in any media.” Aleksandra Mijovic-Cirilovic, Copy-Editing and Proofreading Course, October 2013

“This course was more challenging than I expected. When I told my mother (a sub-editor) this, she replied icily: ‘If it were easy, anyone could do it!”’ while giving me the hairy eyeball…. My tutor was excellent: approachable, prompt and very well restrained.” Daniel Bristow, Copy-Editing and Proofreading Course, October 2013

“I found  my tutor Fiona Walsh incredibly helpful. I really enjoyed working with her. She picked me up when I was down, was patient, helpful and very professional at all times. “The course was invaluable!  The material was current and the tutor gave industry savvy information and straight-talking feedback. This was fine with me because I expect to meet this kind of communication in the real world of business. It’s good practice to learn and take in the tutor’s years of experience and expertise. I’m deciding whether to sign up to the Magazine Journalism Course or the Copywriting Course next. I would describe the course as responsive and relative to the industry as well as supportive and motivational.” Tom Te Kooti Anderson, Press Release and Media Writing Course, September 2013

“I enjoyed the course very much! It is a good way for a novice writer to learn more about the Basics of Creative Writing. Ultimately by the time you are finished you are able to write a short story, with clarity. You learn about the English language, as well as where to start with a story. The characters, the scenes, action and dialogue. I can say that I learnt a great deal, and it has motivated me to  try writing and implementing my skills. The course is also affordable which was a nice bonus. Helen was always easy to get hold of and would always try and answer my questions promptly. I found the content of the course applicable and easily laid out. The Writers College was a great college to better improve myself and my skills.” Sarah Moodie, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

Thank you very much!” Jenny Schmidt, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“I found the course to be really insightful but also challenging. I enjoyed it a lot and am really glad I did it. It gave me an objective insight into my writing abilities and what works and what doesn’t work. Having a professional, knowledgeable and well travelled writer as a mentor was a privilege. Don always answered all my questions in a prompt manner and was really helpful with whatever I inquired about. He had great critical feedback which was much appreciated. I have learned a lot about travel writing and being a freelancer the industry; I would definitely recommend the course to anyone. The experience is definitely well worth it!” Alesha Otto, Travel Writing Course, September 2013

“It was an enjoyable and useful introductory course for beginner writers. Helen gave critical and timely feedback which improved the learning experience. Richard Tessendorf, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“I have wanted to do a writing course for a very long time; I decided to take the plunge this year and start with ‘Basics of Creative Writing’. The whole process with the Writers’ College was slick and efficient from registering right through to completion. My tutor, Helen Brain, was amazing. Her feedback was insightful and I really valued her guidance. I looked forward to hearing from her after I had submitted each module. I was looking to challenge myself and this I certainly did. I enjoyed the whole process and will definitely do some of the other Writers’ College courses in the future”.  Fiona Groves, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“The Writers’ College offers uniquely tailored, high quality educational programs that might not be found elsewhere online. I had the pleasure of learning new skills under lead writer for the game Path of Exile, Edwin McRae, who passed on some of the most interesting tips and tricks for delivering captivating literature that I’ve seen to date. The course had well constructed presentations, modules that transitioned well into one another, and assignments that allowed for practice of practical writing skills. Edwin was very efficient and knowledgeable about course material and the industry. He provided constructive feedback and provided examples from his own work experience. He also provided additional reading and sources outside of the course material for further learning opportunities.” Kyle Strong, Scriptwriting for Video Games, September 2013

“I would describe my experience with the Writers’ College as the best learning experience I have had, second to none. Helen was excellent, friendly and helpful at all times. I cannot wait to do my next course with her. It was the first time in my life that I enjoyed learning and it is also the first time I can take something away from a course and feel good about it. You will be seeing me again.” Christi Smit, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“The course was well administered, well tutored, relevant and surprisingly challenging. I quickly became aware of how many technical aspects of writing I had never considered before. Helen was down to earth and direct (she gave me the choice of ‘sugar coated’ or the ‘real oil’!) which I appreciated. She was always supportive and prompt in her response to queries and feedback. I was really pleased to be able to work with someone like her. The whole experience has been very positive. I loved the fact there was a quality course which was easily accessible and could be done in my own time without having to link to a University. Buyer beware – the content is challenging – which is a good thing!” Loren Allpress, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“The course was highly informative and helped me tremendously to better my writing skills. Helen was very knowledgeable and consistently steered me in the right direction. I would describe the course as very helpful for building skills and teaching you to streamline your writing.” Conor Windust, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“The Writers’ College provided a very useful and convenient course which I could do from home. I started this course with self doubt and anxiety but with time it gave me the confidence and valuable knowledge to pursue writing. I really liked the way the course gradually lead to the ‘final stage’ where I could write a scene on my own. Helen gave prompt and necessary feedback which made great improvements to my writing. I am thankful for her guidance and admire her balance in critique and inspiration. Dealing with staff at the Writers’ College was very smooth; they were always there to provide assistance.” Jaya Singh Sisodia, Basics of Creative Writing Course, September 2013

“The online format of the course is ideal for developing writing skills because you are forced to engage rather than be a passive member of a class. The course objectives were clear and Helen’s critiques were easy to follow; she answered queries quickly and succinctly. The course has inspired me to continue developing my craft. It was worth every cent spent and every minute of my time.” Liezl Watson, Basics of Creative Writing Course, August 2013

Her suggestions were always enlightening. I enjoyed working with her. Overall I would describe the course as efficient, inspiring and thorough.” Kelly Tomes, Copywriting Course, August 2013

“The assignments were fun, and set out with clear instructions and perfect examples. I’ve learnt a lot! I had no hesitation starting the Advanced Creative Writing Course after I had finished the Basics Course, and I’m so glad I did. Helen is an incredible teacher! She always gives constructive, intelligent feedback in a very encouraging way, and I could tell she put a lot of time and effort into marking my work. Helen’s expert guidance in this course is invaluable for anybody wanting to further their writing abilities. I have much more confidence in my own writing, editing and storytelling, all thanks to this course.  I would recommend this course along with the Basics of Creative Writing Course to anyone wanting to start a writing career or just polish their skills. It was immensely fun and very rewarding.” Jared Aisher,  Advanced Creative Writing, August 2013

“The course was a last resort, as I didn’t know what to do about my writing problems. The course exceeded my expectations and was a very helpful, positive experience; I have learnt many valuable lessons that I can take with me. I feel so much better about my writing now. I got to the heart of my writing anxieties and learnt ways of dealing with them and moving forward. Sally was a wonderful, positive, encouraging tutor whose feedback was always prompt and insightful. I discovered the Writers’ College at just the right time and am very happy with my experience.” Laila Murphy, Break Through Your Writing Barriers, August 2013

“I would describe the course as honest and accessible, with clear answers. Helen always had professional and prompt replies to queries and her expectations were always made clear. Thank you Helen. The Creative Writing Courses I have done with the Writers’ College were very useful and have helped me improve my writing skills.” Ann Wickens, Advanced Creative Writing Course, August 2013

“I’ve learned a number of useful tricks and tips for writing. Thus I’ve achieved my goal. Helen’s a lunatic; you need someone of her calibre when it comes to creative writing. She’s someone who thinks outside the box and gets the job done. Like sands in the hourglass, I am now a digital watch.” John Crofts, Advanced Creative Writing Course, August 2013

“The course notes were comprehensive, clear and informative. Alex was an excellent tutor who encouraged me all the way. Her instructions were clear; I enjoyed working with her and learnt a lot. She trusted and challenged my creativity all the way and made me believe in myself and my ability to write. I grew not only as a writer, but also as a person. Thank you Alex. Overall, I had a positive experience.” Magriet Visser, Write a Novel, August 2013

“The course was very user-friendly, well supported, and had good comprehensive content. Mandy was great, very helpful, and tactful (when my one assignment was not up to scratch!). Overall, it was a very worthwhile experience, conducted by professionals who really are masters in their fields.” Prudence McLean, Copywriting Course, August 2013

“The course was wonderful. I learnt so much, and I’m sure I can put all these new-found skills to great use. Many of the skills I developed can be applied to writing, not just for children but for teenagers or adults too, and therefore are a very valuable asset to have! It was hard work at times, but definitely worth the effort. My tutor was fantastic. She really pushed me to be better, and I appreciated that she was honest about what needed changing, but supportive enough that I wasn’t crushed by criticism. She was directive and helpful, but always made sure that I was the one putting in the effort, so that I could develop better writing skills under my own steam. With her help I feel like I have developed, bigger “writing muscles” and more confidence. Thanks Helen! I now have a finished manuscript that I’m very happy with. It was a fantastic experience,  I recommend it to anyone who is even considering it – worth every penny!” Jessica Harvey, Write a Children’s Book Course, August 2013

“Without wishing to sound melodramatic … doing this course has changed my path in life. Before I started the course I felt that I may be able to put words together in some sort of pleasing order. But it was Helen’s confidence in me that has made me realise that I do have a talent and it is worth pursuing. So my new path is writing, I have taken the first steps and have no intention of walking. Helen’s praise and encouragement made me feel so so good. I cannot thank her enough. Life changing. Enough said.” Michelle Peart, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“I give this course a rating of 10/10. It is very informative and educational. It gave me the tools, guidance and the confidence I needed to enter the travel writer’s world. I will definitely be studying further courses through the Writers’ College. Don Pinnock is of course a legend in my eyes and it is a true honour to have been taught by him. He gives the motivation through the need for endless improvement – the mindset that one will never “arrive” and must never stagnate but always inspire to become a master of one’s own creativity and style. Keep up the great work. Thank you.” Lemanja Davidson, Travel Writing, July 2013

“It was a wonderful experience. I learned a lot and everything was very well structured. Mandy was a wonderful tutor and she had a lot of patience with me if I didn’t understand a module. I could email her at any time and she would get back to me right away. I would take the course again if I had the opportunity.” Krysten Vlok, Copywriting, July 2013

“I found the course enlightening. It gave me courage to start a blog to see if others think my writing abilities are good. I would never have taken such a step if I didn’t do this course. Helen was very helpful and made me appreciate my ability as a writer. I found her very approachable. I could ask her for more detailed feedback with the assurance that she would assist me. I’m sad that my course has ended and my communication with Helen has come to an end. I wanted to enhance my skills as a creative writer and this course has helped me along this part. The course overall was fun and enjoyable.” Fatima Seedat, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“An excellent course that exceeded my expectations. Sonny is an excellent tutor and knowing she takes the Advanced Novel Writing Course made my decision to do the next course easy. She has helped take my writing to places I would never have imagined, and has given me skills that will forever help me with writing. There is no way I could have learnt all the skills and found all the information contained in this course on my own. Her feedback (hard as it was to take sometimes!) was invaluable and probably the best part of the course. As someone who had never shown anyone my work, sending the first assignment to my tutor was a scary process. At the completion of this course I was able to give my final assignment to a group of friends to read, and although this was also scary, I was happy with what I’d written and pleased to show them. To anyone trying to write a novel, this is an excellent course and well worth it.” Hayley Barrett, Write a Novel, July 2013

“I enjoyed the course but found it very difficult in the beginning. I did improve as I started to get into it and believe I will improve the more I proofread. My tutor was very kind and understanding – I am an amateur at this and he did not make me feel like I should not be attempting this course. I enjoyed the professionalism and the ease at which the course can be taken.” Lulu Barnard, Copy-editing and Proofreading Course, July 2013

“I found the course very enlightening and well worth doing. I learned lots and I am looking forward to putting things into practice.” Jennie Wells, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“My experience on this course was an absolute dream. Everything was co-ordinated perfectly. The course content was very relevant, insightful and inspiring. The course was conducted to a very high professional standard. It was such a pleasure to deal with true professionals who are obviously experts in their field for a very good reason. Sally was such a joy to deal with; full of positivity, fun, informative and onto it! The one-on-one contact with her felt very real and special, like she was only dealing with me personally and had all the time and interest in the world. She is a real inspiration and truly interested in helping one grow creatively; a joy to work with. The College staff are total professionals! I have dealt with Koos and he has been outstanding. Prompt replies with a lovely degree of warmth – thanks! I would highly recommend this course.” Catherine Bos, Break Through Your Writing Barriers, July 2013

“The course was very interesting. It definitely made me a better designer by reintroducing a multitude of things I haven’t touched on in a while. I found the whole concept-centred approach awesome. “I loved this course, every moment of it. It has been absolutely amazing and my writing has improved so much. Working with Alex really has been a wonderful experience. She challenged me and helped me improve all aspects of my writing and creativity. I am extremely grateful for her involvement in this course. I’ve done creative writing courses before, but this course with Alex has by far exceeded my expectations. It has been my pleasure to work with The Writers’ College, from the website to the tutor. Thank you so much Writers’ College!” llona Nel, Write a Novel, July 2013

“I really enjoyed the course. Each module was interesting and challenging. The course taught me a lot about writing, what I know and what I need to learn. It helped improve my writing skills all round. The course notes were very helpful and Helen was fantastic. She gave positive feedback while also providing constructive criticism. I made a lot of improvements in my writing due to her advice.” William Boyland, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“Everything about the course exceeded my expectations. I have acquired valuable new skills and insights that already help me write better prose and have given me more tools to use in my commercial writing projects. Helen is highly capable in both creative writing and teaching. Her ability to quickly discern my level of skill and mentor accordingly felt as if she created the course materials just for my purpose. I cannot rate her enthusiasm and encouragement enough. I’m totally impressed and grateful for all the Writers’ College has taught me! So much so that I am already preparing to enrol on the next course.” Vince Love, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course and feel that I have polished my Basic Creative Writing skills greatly. I had always done well in English at school (many years ago) but discovered I had much to learn. I had tried a writing course with another provider and my feedback was consistently too good. I knew that this was not realistic and felt I was not benefiting from the course. Helen Brain was a very good tutor. As promised in her early communication, her appraisals and criticisms were honest and helpful. The individual tuition was great value for money. I plan to do another course with the Writers’ College as finances allow. I felt I learned a lot from the course; it was professional and challenging. I would recommend this course to other keen writers.” Kerry Montgomery, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2013

“It was a very informative course and I learnt a lot more than expected. Karen is a very knowledgeable tutor and I now have the strategies I need to write successful content for the Web. Overall the experience was valuable and worthwhile.” Rachel Richards, Writing for the Web, June 2013

“Doing the course was an awesome experience. I have learned a lot! My tutor Louis was very good. He gave constructive criticism and was very clear about where I could improve; he was always prompt on replies and feedback. I will definitely consider doing another course – I’m still deciding which one. The course was interesting and not as easy as I thought, but I like a challenge and enjoyed it immensely.” Marli van Rooyen, Proofreading and Copy-Editing, June 2013

“I feel like I have learnt quite a bit more about writing. Helen was very encouraging and supportive and gave good feedback. It was a pleasure working with her. The College’s service was very professional.” Hayley Mugglestone, Basics of Creative Writing, June 2013

“I enjoyed the course very much. Helen Brain is a great teacher. Her insight and advice will stay with me in my writing forever. My intention was to get refreshed on the Basics of Creative Writing, but I feel like I’m leaving informed and not merely refreshed. The efficiency of the registry department is far higher than I expected, and the course material offered is fun and insightful.” Elizabeth van Niekerk-Vente , Basics of Creative Writing, June 2013

“The course was excellent, practical, well structured and I had a great tutor who provided excellent tips and feedback. The course met all my objectives and in some instances even exceeded expectations. I would describe the course as excellent value for money and well worth your while.” Johan Swanepoel, Travel Writing, June 2013

“Being a school teacher for many years, I thought I knew quite a lot about writing when I started this course. I soon realised I had a lot to learn and probably still do. The course taught me aspects of Microsoft Word I didn’t know existed and straightened out my understanding of grammar rules. I learnt the rules for writing manuscripts and how to make my characters believable. The greatest learning came from Sonny’s pithy and expressive comments which constantly pop into my mind as I write. I received far more effort in guiding me to improve my work from Sonny, than I thought I would. She wades in boots and all and digs deep. She certainly knows her craft and how to pass it on. It was like the TV programme where they gave participants an entire makeover, except it was my writing skills that got the make-over.” Gaynor Lincoln, Write a Novel, June 2013

“The course was exactly what I needed. It taught me what I needed to know about writing and publishing. Louis was a great tutor; he was understanding and motivating.” Christopher Zeuch, Write a Novel, June 2013

“It was a very well structured course that is perfect for extramural learning and a great introduction into the magazine journalism industry. I received amazingly thorough feedback that was helpful, encouraging and practical. My tutor really made this course for me and went over and above all my expectations. For someone looking to enter the industry, but with no experience, this course has given me knowledge of magazine journalism as well as get me started with writing samples and the confidence to submit query letters.” Esta Chappell, Magazine Journalism Course, May 2013

“My time on the course has been one of the most enjoyable learning experiences of my life. It was an enjoyable, well laid out and well-presented course. The insight and knowledge that I have gained I would consider invaluable. Louis was a pleasure to work with. His insight and feedback were, for me, the most valuable parts of the course. His constructive criticism and suggestions always made improvements to my own work and understanding. I have come away with a better understanding of the trade and, more importantly, a better understanding of my own writing and the areas I need to focus on. After a year of learning, I feel better equipped to continue with my novel.” Brian Greaves, Write a Novel Course, May 2013

“I have learned a lot from this course and will never look at advertising the same way again, and that is a good thing. Mandy was really great! The skill you learn with the Writers' College is something you can definitely put to use.” Noah Landsberg, Copywriting Course, May 2013

I feel capable (albeit intimidated by the industry) and inspired to tackle new objectives. Overall I would describe the course as inspiring and invigorating! It's just the weapon I need to tackle my ambitions instead of longing and dreaming. It showed me that I am capable when armed with the right tools and knowledge.” Gratia-Mari Joubert, Advanced Creative Writing, April 2013

As someone who loves grammar, the course helped me deal with the things I had wondered about for years. The notes are also a great reference tool I will continue to use. Overall, I enjoyed it. My tutor was exceedingly helpful and very willing to explain concepts that were not so easy for me to grasp. The course met all my objectives, I just need to do more work so that I retain the knowledge.” Boitumelo Rikhotso, Advanced Grammar Course for Writers, April 2013
“The course was challenging and insightful. I really enjoyed the one-on-one experience with my tutor Louis. In other courses where you're in a class or have other delegates attending I sometimes find it intimidating, but this course was the opposite. The fact Louis has such great industry experience was the core to the success of this course for me. Louis is very knowledgeable and has relevant industry experience, which made his feedback valuable, relevant and usable. His feedback was constructive which helped foster my confidence and technical abilities in writing. The time spent with The Writers’ College has helped me become a more mature and disciplined writer, and has taken me one step closer to mastering my craft.” Michele van Eck, Write a Novel Course, April 2013
“The course offered me the opportunity to let my hair down and really explore my creative side; I’m all smiles. Helen has a particularly sensitive and intuitive approach that did not inhibit my creativity, and at the same time was open and direct enough to tell me what works and what doesn’t. “When I started the course, my goal was to begin a book and see it through to the end. My vague knowledge of how to do this was clarified by the course notes, but it was the step-by-step process of actually writing a book, and the feedback from my tutor, that I found most valuable. I would never have completed my book without Helen's guidance. She was forthright and challenging; her input insightful. Whenever I felt that my story wasn't good enough - or that I wasn't a good enough writer, she was there to pound me back into shape. Essentially, Helen provided me with the self-confidence to see a story through to its end... and more importantly, the courage to start the next one. The course was unbelievably thorough, it left nothing out and I refer back to the modules all the time for info and advice. I have gained so much insight. I am now determined to complete my manuscript.” Surani Ramachandra, Write a Childrens’ Book, October 2012

“The course answered all the questions I had about the magazine industry. I feel it gave me a headstart to making a name for myself as a magazine journalist. My tutor Karin was extremely helpful and was always there to answer any questions - the best teacher I have ever had. Overall I had a great experience, learnt a lot and loved every minute of it. The Writers’ College truly rekindled my love for the written word.” Tancrid Muller, Magazine Journalism, October 2012

“The course was well-structured and informative. Susan was very efficient; she marked each module quickly and her feedback was positive and very useful. The course gave me a different perspective and insight into newsletter writing.” Write Better Newsletters, Lisa Coetzee, October 2012

“The course was a very good introduction to creative writing. It has motivated me to take  the Advanced Creative Writing Course. Helen had some spot-on critiques and my writing improved after I followed her suggestions. The many exercises got me writing, instead of just looking at a blank page; I also feel more skilled than I did a few months ago. Overall, I had fun, improved my writing and I look forward to signing up for another course, so I'll just let those facts speak for themselves.” Joshua Smith, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2012

“The course material was brilliant! I found everything helpful and easily applicable to my own writing. I was extremely happy with the entire course. Alex is a wonderful lecturer! Her use of positive criticism was amazing. It helped me approach my editing in a different way. The support she gave me was priceless, it got me through the times when I thought the mountain of writing was too high to climb. I have so many things to say about her, but what I will say is: Thank you Alex! The course objective was a couple of chapters and twenty five thousand words. Three and a half months in, I had hit the mark already. Alex hinted that it would be a shame if I didn't finish my entire first draft of my manuscript before the end of the course. It was a tall order, but before the end I sat with a manuscript of hundred and seventeen thousand words. She helped me achieve above and beyond what I thought I was capable of. I'm happy to say that whatever made me stumble onto your college changed my life, and turned a small hope and dream into a reality.” Omri Pieterse Write a Novel, September 2012

“It was a very useful and enlightening course that taught me that there is more to creative writing than knowing the language fairly well. Helen was very helpful, her feedback clarified which areas of my writing I need to work on. The course met all my objectives; I now feel the need to take writing very seriously as well as continue to learn as much as I can in order to be a good writer. “This course was a lot of fun and was most comprehensive; I highly recommend it! It provided all the necessary tools for becoming a published travel writer, such as the dos and don'ts for submitting articles to editors, as well as various writing tips and pitfalls which prevent wasting time on unnecessary mistakes. Don was a fantastic and patient mentor! I was very nervous submitting my work to such a well regarded and exceptional writer, but Don encouraged me and kept me going throughout the more complicated sections of the course. I appreciated his honesty and direct approach, but found that he never minded if I queried something or asked for clarity - he shares his experience and knowledge gladly. I have a better understanding of travel writing now, and I am better equipped to set about getting my work published. This is a professional, high quality College that offers slick courses of international standard. The fact that you're mentored by a professional in the field is an added bonus.” Wendy McSeveney, Travel Writing, September 2012

“The course was a great introduction to the world of writing. Helen was great! She was patient, understanding and helpful. It met all my objectives; I feel motivated and inspired.” Willem Vorster, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2012

“My experience with the course was, in a word, great. The notes were excellent, I found my tutor’s comments very helpful. Helen responded to additional queries I had and was able to pick out some good improvement points for me to work on. I definitely feel that I have learnt a lot about the basics of creative writing; it was good starting point for me.” Kevin Blignaut, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2012

“The course has added great value to my skills as a writer and has highlighted things I would never have considered before. The course notes were very informative and interesting, and they were written in personable and professional language. I found the most value in the contact I had with my tutor. Lisa was great to work with. She gave me excellent advice and guidance around every corner, with quick feedback and thorough explanations. I learnt so much. The course taught me how to write like a freelance writer, but also how to think like one. I now know what to look for - article ideas and elements in my article. It has been informative, interesting, stimulating and fun. I look forward to the next course I do with the Writers' College.” Atka Young, Magazine Journalism Course, August 2012

“It's such a practical course and I learnt so much from writing so many complete stories. Ginny was always so fast with her feedback, which was always constructive, detailed and honest. She does not only tell you what you're doing wrong, but how you can fix it in a way that suits you and your style best. She was open-minded and a pleasure to trade ideas with! I wanted to overcome the barrier of writing a good story, but not being able to battle it out to create a final, well-rounded product. Doing the course is exactly the boost any aspiring writer needs without being influenced by too much technical detail.” Tania Terblanche, Short Story Writing for Magazines, August 2012

“I enjoyed doing the course. Helen is a really good lecturer. I really enjoyed learning from her. Overall, I learnt a lot and had fun while doing so.” Elaine Borman, Basics of Creative Writing, August 2012

“I found the course exciting and interesting. I never expected to learn as much as I did. Karen Jeynes is an excellent lecturer. The feedback I received from her on assignments was definitely the reason I managed to improve my writing over the six-month period. Karen continually encouraged me and increased my confidence, and I was able to complete the course successfully. Her criticism of work submitted was fair and she gave clear advice on how to overcome the writing deficiencies in my work. Passing the course had a lot to do with her tutoring skills. I will be back next year to enrol for another creative writing course with The Writers’ College.” Marinda Thurston, Scriptwriting Course, August 2012

“I thought the course would be good, but it turned out to be great! It was fantastic to have Yvonne as my tutor. Her responses to my submitted assignments were lightning-fast and her feedback was frank and encouraging. The course more than met my objectives. I loved it, I learned lots and I will consider doing other courses through the Writers’ College in the future.” Ann Huston, Travel Writing Course, August 2012

“I've caught the writing bug. As far as I know there is no cure - only writing courses to help treat the symptoms. The Basics of Creative Writing Course has provided some relief for now. I’ll be sure to enrol in another course with the Writers' College if my symptoms flare up again. Helen was a wonderful tutor to have. I've come to realise that writing is tough but so rewarding if you stick to it. Helen’s guidance and encouragement kept me motivated and helped me to press on. Doing the course was a wonderful way to get guidance and advice from those who’ve been in the very same beginner shoes I find myself wearing now.” Wanda van der Wath, The Basics of Creative Writing Course, August 2012

"At the beginning of this course I was so hopeless about writing that I really thought I can't be helped.  I thought that the only thing that might help is to go and see a psychiatrist to help me remove the chronic writer's block I am sitting with.  I thought that I was what Salieri said in Amadeus – why did God give me the desire but not the talent or the creativity?  I was useless with The Artist’s Way.  I would do two weeks and then just, somehow, stop.
I really didn’t expect much from the course.  I thought it would teach me a few skills and perhaps scratch the surface of a problem.  I didn’t expect what happened.  I didn’t expect epiphany after epiphany and to find the actual root of the problem.  In fact, right after I paid the fees for the course I thought that it would be a massive waste of money.
Well... I don’t know what happened exactly between then and now  – it was like a car crash... first I was here, then I was there and then I was thrown out of the car and then it was all over. The point is that today I have ideas.  I look with different eyes at the world.  I think differently about my thought processes and I actually started writing.  I outlined almost the entire plot of a novel. I don’t know what changed.  I just know it did.

Today, I am not the same person that started this course...and it’s a good thing.  At the risk of sounding very soppy: I was brought back to life." Anonymous, Break through your Writing Barriers

“It was a fantastic course: very educational and easy to comprehend. Alex was a wonderful tutor. She was very supportive and inspired me to work harder and accomplish more. Deciding to do a writing course with the Writers’ College was the best educational choice I ever made.” Aileen Smith, Write a Novel Course, August 2012

“I have a much better understanding of how things work online, about what works and what doesn’t. I can apply everything I've learned to my website and hopefully future career as a writer. Karen was very nice, friendly and always ready to help. Kind words were always inspirational! The Writers' College is the best place I've ever found online. This was my second completed course at the College and I plan do many more courses through them.” Natashja Singleton, Writing for the Web Course, August 2012

“I found the course to be very good. I am a professional writer in the advertising industry; the course taught me new things and the exercises were helpful in improving some of my social media skills. Karen was a great tutor. She lives in the social media world and it shows. Her insight on the subject matter was obvious from the get-go and it was a pleasure to receive her even-handed, constructive feedback. The Writers' College provided me with valuable knowledge and tools I needed to grow professionally. The entire process, from registration through the learning component to completion was easy and efficient!” James Davie, Writing for Social Media Course, July 2012

“It was a fun and enlightening experience. Helen Brain was most encouraging; her critique was always valid and helpful. The course met my objectives; in retrospect I could have possibly tried a little harder but I have renewed confidence in my writing and I learned some very useful storytelling techniques. Overall, I was very pleased with the course. I would definitely recommend The Writers’ College to anyone looking to enhance their writing skills.” Katherine Otty, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012

“It was a very good experience; I learnt a lot and strengthened my weaknesses. I also learnt how to edit a scene completely. My tutor Helen was very good; she was blunt and explained my mistakes to me. She motivated me and was patient with me. I enjoyed the feedback and the motivation. The course met all of my objectives; I got a lot better at being able to describe things. It was hard work but in the end it was worth it.” Zoe Garden, Creative Writing for High School Students Course, July 2012

“It was a very positive and encouraging experience. Doing the course has made me much more confident and I now have faith in my ability. The experience with my tutor was excellent. Sonny marked my work often within 24 hours. Her feedback was clear, constructive and her advice was given at my pace. With every module, her advice was above and beyond what I anticipated. In areas where I struggled, particularly with formatting, Sonny gave me extra support. Overall it was a very rewarding experience.” Christine Wardle, The Write a Novel Course, July 2012

“The course opened my eyes to a new world of writing. It was a challenging yet rewarding course; it exceeded my expectations in all aspects. I enjoyed the fact that it was so practical. Karen is a great tutor! She replied promptly to my assignments and any queries I submitted. She provided valuable feedback - it was evident that she has much knowledge of this industry. I would definitely look out for any other course offered by her. My experience at the Writers' College was certainly a very positive one from beginning to end. I will definitely recommend the institution to anyone interested in completing a writing course.” Renate Venier, Writing for the Web Course, July 2012

“I enjoyed the course - it was fun but challenging at the same time. I will recommend the course to anyone who is willing to learn, whether it’s with putting yourself out there in interviews or just writing in a different style. My tutor was always there to answer any questions I had. When I was stuck with what to write about, Lisa was always ready with suggestions. The Writers’ College has taught me a lot about the industry of writing; it absolutely met my objectives! I have grown as a writer for sure.” Grace van der Westhuizen, The Basics of Feature Writing Course, July 2012

“The course notes were thorough, informative and relevant. Feedback was prompt and helpful, and Don was encouraging. I would describe the course as challenging in the best and most useful kind of way!” Helen Wallace, Travel Writing Course, July 2012

“Mandy was always approachable and willing to offer friendly and professional advice. Her feedback on all assignments was clear, constructive and insightful.” Daryl Brown, Copywriting Course, July 2012

“I very much enjoyed the practical assignments; they gave me the opportunity to practice my skills. It's one thing to have notes but it adds such meaning when you actually have to apply them. I found my tutor Fiona Walsh to be prompt, considerate and generous. Her feedback after every assignment was always constructive and insightful; it gave me the tools to improve my writing. I found this methodology invaluable. Thank you. I am considering taking the Writing for Social Media Course later this year.” Jann Robertson, Write a Great Press Release Course, July 2012

“I had a lot of fun with the course; I set out to learn how to write and I did. The notes were informative and gave practical examples for all the topics. Helen has so much knowledge, it would be difficult not to learn anything from her. Her feedback was always insightful and it made me look at my work in a different way. The Writers’ College gives anyone the opportunity to start learning. I really believe that anyone would benefit from doing one of their many courses. I'm grateful for all the knowledge I have gained.” Werner Diedericks, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012

“The course was fantastic, very professional, of high quality and I really learned a lot. It was well worth it! My experience with my tutor was very good - it was an honour to have Mike teach me as he knows the field very well.” Magdel Louw, Write a Novel Course, July 2012

“This course was exactly what I was looking for; it really improved my knowledge of the key components of creative writing. The course notes were fantastic - clear, concise and easy to follow. Helen was fantastic to work with; responsive, friendly and her comments showed me that she had really taken the time to read what I had written and knew her stuff! I would love to have her as a tutor again. The course met all my objectives; it was absolutely great.  Thanks for your flexibility - the Writers’ College, and for working in with my many other commitments and deadlines. I really appreciated this - it made a huge difference to my experience of the course.” Claire Barry, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012

“I was impressed with the volume and depth of the exercises. Some of them were very demanding but they opened my eyes to just how stories are crafted. I've learnt valuable tools to edit my texts and cut them back to what is required to push stories forward without getting lost in long descriptions. Now I feel more confident about the writing process - thank you. With English being my second language, I doubted whether I would be able to write in a way that was acceptable to a native speaker but Helen gave me the feeling I could write just as well. She answered all my questions directly and promptly and encouraged me to keep on practising. Thanks to her constructive criticism I understand more about how to build a story and keep the reader's interest. What's more, I've learned a great deal about the English language just by writing and rewriting. The course helped me to be a more confident and inspiring writer.” Guenter Prinesdom, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012

“It was a concise and thorough course; I learnt a huge amount. I have done three courses with the Writers’ College now and realise I have barely scraped the surface of what I need to do and the journeys I have to go on to become a vaguely useful writer. I never anticipated how challenging flash fiction would be so I would like to do more. Alex rocks; she is calm and collected, which is necessary because I reckon new writers are terribly nervous and emotionally immature about their work. We are like toddlers: we need to be guided into maturity with patience and encouragement. She has a very classical eye which balanced out my tendency to want to break the bank, and in the end, I think that yin-yang was good for my writing. She was professional and a pleasant lady too. I’ll be back to sign up for another course.”  Eleanor Talbot, Literary Short Story & Flash Fiction Course, June 2012

"It was an excellent experience. It was hard work but very satisfactory. I enjoyed every moment of writing and learning which says a lot for the course content, subject matter and support. Alex Smith was an absolutely incredible tutor; I could not have wished or asked for anyone better. The course absolutely met my objectives and more. I have completed three courses with The Writers' College now. My initial objective was to learn to write; I needed to put my experiences and stories into writing. I had no idea where to begin or what to look out for. I started with the Basics of Creative Writing Course, then took Advanced Creative Writing and then Novel Writing. It was a magnificent journey. Thank you very much.” Danie Markgraaff, Write a Novel Course, June 2012

“Ginny is an excellent tutor who surpassed my expectations and made it all an enjoyable experience. She offered lots of encouragement, fair evaluations and plenty of tips for improvement. Ginny responded quickly to my emails and assignments (I was anxiously waiting!). I will recommend the Writers’ College to others because of the experience with my tutor. Initially I looked at a cheaper course (based in Sydney), but on reflection I’m glad I chose a course that assigned an individual tutor. I am happy with my experience and may consider taking other courses.” Pamela Ferla, Short Story Writing for Magazines, June 2012

“I enjoyed the course. I found it challenging. It forced me to think about the way I communicate in the business world. I found Susan to be very fair and professional. She encouraged me to complete the course. The Writers' College and the Business Writing Toolkit Course is of a very high standard.” Tania Pantony, Business Writing Toolkit Course, June 2012

“I loved the experience; I truly feel I learnt so many new and practical writing skills from doing the course. Helen Brain  was extremely supportive and constructive with her feedback. I am very happy with my experience with The Writers’ College. I'm currently doing the Advanced Creative Writing Course with Helen - which I guess says it all.” Deborah Forbes, Basics of Creative Writing Course, June 2012

“I've had a wonderful week thanks to being placed as a runner-up in a short story competition: http://www.cazart.co.uk/index.php?page=story&id=346. I really believe that it's a direct result of this course as I'd never have sent it in otherwise.” Norah Jansen, Break through your Writing Barriers, June 2012

“The course has inspired me to become a better writer. With awareness comes opportunity; effort makes it possible. The effort I put in was reflected in my results and I feel my journey is just beginning. I enjoyed my contact with Susan, I believe her personal anecdotal comments brought the course to life and I responded positively to this approach. After having done the course, I am more aware of what I don't know, and I realise the effort I need to put in to achieve my goals. The Writers’ College is a professional provider of writing courses and I am fortunate to have benefited from their service. I have recommended it to others and will continue to do so.” Sheryl Nelley, Writing Coach Course, June 2012

“Overall, I would describe the course as fantastic. The most useful part was the feedback I received from Helen. I knew most of the content but the application of it to my own children's book was what I needed help with. Helen was so helpful; I feel like she became a friend and mentor on the journey.” Lyn McNamee, Writing Books For Children – Part One, June 2012

“The Writers’ College offers first class courses with first class lecturers. I was guided step by step throughout the writing process and the various techniques and genres that go into writing a novel were explained. I liked the assignments in particular and the clear structure of the course. I was also impressed by the information provided about the publishing procedure and the many links to take the manuscript further. Alex Smith was a wonderfully supportive lecturer; without her constant encouragement I would not have finished the course.” Elizabeth MacDonald, Write a Novel Course, June 2012

“The course was insightful. Alex was a great help; she gave very constructive feedback.” Tjaart Fourie, Write a Novel Course, June 2012

“Doing the course was an amazing and empowering experience; it was a tremendous opportunity for learning and growth. What I really appreciated about my tutor Karen, apart from her expertise and love for what she does, was her support and encouragement. Without her continuous motivation, I know I would not have stayed on the course. Her positiveness has given me a new lease on life. The course met all my objectives and more; before the course I was unaware of how search engines worked or what was needed to make a website work. I am very happy with my decision to have gone on the course.” Zulfah Abrahams, Writing for the Web Course, June 2012

“The course was extremely helpful. Helen Brain is a good teacher; she was positive and supportive and she gave a lot of good advice. Overall, it was a very positive experience and it has encouraged me to do more writing.” Joan Rotherham, Basics of Creative Writing Course, June 2012.

“My experience at The Writers’ College was very positive. The course was very enjoyable and a useful experience; it helped me identify gaps in my writing. The course was all about tutor-student interaction; a very positive tutor-student relationship was created which allowed me to experiment and grow. The course absolutely met my objectives; some of the assignments were perhaps a bit too easy, but all in all the general experience was a positive one. The administrative interactions were efficient and the electronic medium was extremely useful. The Writers’ College has mastered online courses and I'd recommend them to anyone who would like to improve their writing skills while not being bound to attend lectures.” Sanchia Lubbe, Writing Coach Course, May 2012

“My experience was excellent; I learnt a lot from the course. I finally feel confident that I am able to complete a manuscript for publication. Louis was an excellent tutor. He managed to keep me on the right track as I have the tendency to sometimes lose focus. I feel my writing has improved a lot with his guidance. It was an excellent experience and I was assisted by very efficient people.” Erika Frouws, Write a Novel Course, May 2012

“I found the course interesting; I have developed skills in creative writing which I appreciate. My tutor Helen was quick to respond and accommodating (particularly with my time management towards the end of the course). I appreciated her helpful feedback and encouragement along the way. I am pleased to say I gained confidence in my writing from her feedback. Overall, I felt the College and its courses were very accessible and I received good quality training.” Sue Mitchell, Basics of Creative Writing, May 2012

“I loved the balance of theory and practice, the personal contact with a tutor and the independence of distance learning. I always looked forward to my next module and found the course notes and library articles engaging and interesting. I often thought how lucky I was to have Paul Smith as my tutor. I admired his teaching and writing skills, I appreciated his honesty and sensitivity and his generosity of time. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him.” Janet Hart, Magazine Journalism, May 2012

“Overall, the course was a pleasurable and insightful experience. The notes really drew you in; you were never unsure where the module was going or what was needed from you. The worksheets got you thinking and allowed for creative thinking. Mandy was extremely encouraging, she is obviously a talented individual. She had excellent feedback on how to improve and better your ideas. I was very impressed at every level; from admin to notes to my tutor and to the understanding of the course coordinators.” Linda Jooste, The Copywriting Course, May 2012

“I enjoyed doing the course a lot; I'm more confident now with my English writing. English is not my first language. I wanted to try something different to improve my writing, vocabulary and even grammar skills and this course absolutely met my objectives. My tutor was always very clear and respectful with her comments. The course was fun, challenging and I learnt a lot.” Helena Cuesta, Writing Coach Course, May 2012

“The course was everything I expected and more. It was enjoyable, entertaining and a fun way of learning. The experience I had with my lecturer was absolutely perfect; Sally was always kind and helpful and supportive. The course was informative and helped me achieve what I wanted to achieve. It was a good experience, one that I would love to do again and one that I would recommend to others.” Monica Terlouw, Break Through Your Writing Barriers, May 2012

“It was an excellent course; I learnt more than I expected. Ginny was terrific, she made it fun and had very insightful comments and great advice.” Lawrence Shaffer, Short Story Writing, April 2012

“I found the course very informative. I highly recommend the course to everyone responsible for writing articles for newsletters. I liked the approach to the assignments; the fact that I had a deadline motivated me to structure time in order to complete them. The assignments were practical and challenging. Susan was extremely friendly and helpful. Her honest praise, feedback and critique was much appreciated. She went the extra mile wherever possible. The course exceeded my expectations. The material inspired me with many ideas for our company newsletter and I have obtained positive feedback from colleagues as to the improvement of my writing skills. I used to see writing as a daunting task and honestly did not know how to approach writing an article. Now I view it as exciting and am motivated to push myself to write good articles for my company. Studying a hands-on practical course specific to my requirements through The Writers’ College was a pleasant and gratifying experience.” Mandy Thackwray, Write Better Newsletters, April 2012

“The course was hard work but well worth it. It was an emotional roller coaster ride; it tested my creative abilities and self-discipline. Mike gave excellent feedback. I think he expected me to write a crime thriller while I wanted to write a novel about crime and things other than those found in a conventional thriller, i.e. how the protagonist grew psychologically and about relationships in general. I had done the Short Story Writing Course through the College which was most successful; I have subsequently had a few short stories published. I am better at that than writing a novel! The fact that my skills need honing is not the course's fault; it taught me the necessary tools I needed to write a novel. Overall, it was an enjoyable learning curve.” Ann Hoffman, Write a Novel Course, April 2012

“I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The course was specific to my objective which was to improve my fiction writing. It was good to visit the basics of writing again and give concepts some formality and structure. It also expanded my knowledge of ways to gather material. I was particularly glad to use some of my existing fiction in some of the exercises which gave me "double" feedback; it also made the course and Helen's comments more relevant. Helen was a very gentle and encouraging tutor which was great when you are exposing yourself to criticism and critique for the first time. She was most gracious as I bombarded her with assignments with no break in between! The course showed me I had a good grasp of what is expected of a writer and I feel more confident in going forward. The writing community was so different to my usual communities but I felt welcome and was very appreciative of the encouragement I received from administrators and course tutors.” Fiona Coward, Basics of Creative Writing, April 2012

“If you want to improve your writing skills, The Writers’ College is the place to go. The tutors are friendly and they treat you as a real writer. The course material was informative and clear! definitely a plus. Alex was so patient with me; I learnt skills that enabled me to rework my entire novel and maybe publish it in the near future. Alex inspired me when I was feeling down-and-out and I have taken a lot of advice with me. I will most certainly invite her to my first signing (laugh out loud). The course met my objectives; my finished novel was 60,000 words and I am still rewriting it again and again.” Michelle Randall, Write a Novel Course, April 2012

“I was really pleased with the overall experience, thank you. Ginny was excellent and very encouraging. I feel more informed about my writing and motivated to carry on.” Kay Wilson, Short Story Course, April 2012

“The course was stimulating and motivating. Although correspondence was brief, I built a respect for Helen based on the good outcomes of her advice. It felt good being under her tutelage. The course met my objectives; I am somewhat more confident of my abilities. It helped me see my work more critically; learning how to spot the dross has been very important.” Bill McAndie, Basics of Creative Writing, April 2012

“I gave a 100% and got back 500%. It exceeded all my expectations. Alex Smith is an exceptional tutor. From Module 1 she had her finger on the pulse and understood my creative vision. I was extremely impressed by her professionalism and depth of knowledge. Not only did I grow in skill and confidence but I was able to learn on many levels, which made it all the more enjoyable. I owe you Alex! The course met all my objectives. I've been wanting to write a novel for 30 years and could never get further than a couple of rough notes; now I have 48 000 words under my belt and plan to have a finished manuscript by June 2013. It has been an exciting journey, and I'm extremely satisfied with what I've achieved. Thank you! I wish I'd discovered The Writers' College years ago.”Diane Cursons, Write A Novel Course, April 2012

“It's ironic but words really can't describe the phenomenal experience. From the help and support of Koos and Nichola to my tutor Alex, it has been sublime and life changing. Alex is a rockstar. She is amazing and supportive and honestly she is the reason that I'm taking the follow-up course in September. For years I wanted to do a course but financially I couldn't manage. That's why I want to say thank you to Mavis Bleazard for the bursary that allowed one of my greatest dreams to come true and to the College and Alex for the amazing warmth and support.” Mark Scheepers, Write a Novel Course, April 2012

“I didn't know anything about fiction writing when I started. I was advised to do the basic course and take it from there. I took the risk; if it wasn't for the quality of the course, building up from modules 1 to 12 and text instalments, I wouldn't have been successful. Alex was always only an email away to respond to issues; sometimes it felt as though I was her only pupil. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have passed the course, never mind with distinction. It absolutely exceeded my expectations. Now I am confident I will get a book published within a year. It was the most creative and satisfying study experience at a professional level I have done for at least ten years. Thank you.” Louis Wiid, Write a Novel Course, 2012

“My experience on the course was great. The constructive criticism helped me hone my skills. My tutor’s promptness was usually great. Her comments on my work motivated and inspired me greatly; any criticism she had was fair and always right. The course was awesome, I would seriously consider doing another.” Laura-May Randell, Introduction to Poetry, April 2012

“I learnt a lot in short space of time, which was fantastic. Karen was very approachable and always replied promptly. This was important to me because I needed to wait for a response before I could continue working on an assignment.” Micharn Pollock, Scriptwriting Course, April 2012

“The teaching was great, I just need to motivate myself more to write every day and consult online documentation. Helen was more than willing to mark my work speedily as I pushed the boundary of my deadline. I really appreciated that. Online communication is an excellent method for teaching writing; I look forward to more courses and more good experiences.” Manuela Tyne, Basics of Creative Writing Course, April 2012

“My objective was to put together a solid, professional groundwork for creative writing and to tack a certificate onto my résumé; the course certainly excelled at both. The course gives a very solid foundation for storytelling. The course certainly succeeds at building and applying the basics of creative writing and covering all of the essentials. Helen's great fun to work with and relates to a teenager's worldview surprisingly well. She was always available and I could expect a response to any question within a day or so. Feedback was concise and had the sort of direct quality I wanted; I would always know exactly what to improve on from the feedback.” Lane Tao, Creative Writing for High School Students, April 2012
“I am so excited to reach the end of my novel - something I never thought would happen. I now have a polished story that I am happy with. Even if it never brings me in a cent, it proves I can do it, I can finish a book. The prospect of starting the next one doesn't feel so onerous now. The course was well worth the money; it was wonderful to have someone looking over my shoulder while I wrote, to gently shift me in the right direction with the lightest touch and keep me focused on the story. Helen gave perfect advice - everything she said was pitched to push me further, make me think and drive me to write better. I have her voice in my head while I'm writing now and it's helping to make my stories come alive - deep and grateful thanks. The Writers' College has a professional, personal approach that will extend any writer at any stage of their career.” Irene Hamer, Write a Children's Book, March 2012

“I believe I am now adequately trained and equipped to write publishable articles. I expected a basic course that would serve more as an introduction to Magazine Journalism, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the course offered much more than that. It all depends on how much you are willing to put in! Tracey deserves a huge thank you. Her feedback was always straight-forward and frank, but never too critical. Her approach gave me the confidence to submit my assignments with knowledge that I could rely on her objective feedback to improve my work. She responded very promptly to my submissions and provided me with valuable information whenever I asked for it. She is definitely a natural tutor. I always wondered whether I really had the ability to write anything decent; The Writers' College and my tutor taught me and showed me that I did. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to venture into the field of Magazine Journalism.” Christine Vorster, Magazine Journalism, March 2012

“It was a valuable course that delivered what it promised. It taught me the Basics of Creative Writing in a very simple, yet effective way. Helen is extremely wise, patient and a helpful tutor. She inspires would-be writers by providing feedback which is both honest and encouraging. I've never signed up for any sort of writing course before (nor have I done a lot of writing) but after being guided by such a brilliant teacher I feel compelled to continue writing. The Writers’ College offers quality one-on-one tutoring to students with talented, wise and accomplished writers willing to share their valuable knowledge with you.” Suzanne Kolaczynski, Basics of Creative Writing Course, March 2012

“It was a challenging but valuable course for would-be writers. Ray did a good job. His support on the "bad bits" was excellent and his constructive comments were too; his praise for the "good bits" was genuine and sincere. The course met my objectives; it took me from where I had been when I left school and gave me an opportunity to learn how to study again. I praise the help I received from Koos in learning how to set up the exercises, it must have been very frustrating for him! I also praise the high quality tutelage from Ray .” Janet Green, Advanced Grammar Course for Writers, March 2012

“The course can be described as enriching, challenging, inspiring, life changing and addictive. Helen was a wonderful tutor, inspiring, encouraging and helpful. She pushed and challenged me, she didn’t allow me to rest on my laurels. She gave me confidence to try new things, take risks and grow. The course really helped develop my writing skills; I thought I was a good writer before, but now I realise I have much to learn. Taking the course has started me in the right direction, thank you.” Andie Tane, Basics of Creative Writing Course, March 2012
“I recommend this course to anyone who wants to discover if they have talent to write. I learnt a lot more than I expected. After doing the course, I am more confident in knowing where my writing career is headed and which areas of my writing I need to work on. I have a greater understanding of the mechanics of Novel Writing. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor than Henrietta; she knows her subject. She conveyed feedback in an easy to understand manner and in a very gentle way made me aware of my weaker points, where I can improve, and of course, where my stronger points are. I have gained valuable knowledge just from her comments and in the same breath she has opened my eyes to how much I still have to learn.” Ezelle Louw, Write a Novel, February 2012

“The course was really fantastic; I learnt a lot of new skills and feel like my writing has improved dramatically. The most important thing for me, was that because I work full time for an online company I was able to apply each assignment to my current marketing objectives. Karen was great to work with and was very understanding of my situation and having to do things differently to how some of the assignments had specified so I appreciated the individual approach of the course. It was a valuable learning experience for anyone wanting to learn at their own pace.” Anonymous, Writing for the Web, February 2012

“I was really impressed with the practicality of the course as opposed to it being a whole lot of theory. I found Karin extremely helpful and always willing to make herself available to help me. The feedback I received from Karin and Tracey was really good and I will use it now for submitting my very first article! Karin was very approachable and kept me motivated throughout. Her passion for what she does is very evident, she has inspired me to make the most out of what I learnt. I am very impressed that in only 6 months, the course and my lecturer were able to adequately arm me to go out into the real world in my first solo attempt at writing for a magazine. I highly recommend that anybody who is even thinking about doing some writing, sign up for a Writers’ College course that interests them.” Glenn Weldon, Magazine Journalism, February 2012
“The Writers’ College was the only company that offered such specific courses combined with flexibility. My objective was to get back into writing, finish some pieces and improve my writing confidence. I've achieved all of these and I hope to have my first sale to a magazine in the near future. It was a good experience and a valuable learning curve. Ginny was awesome! She gave great feedback and was very supportive and motivating without being pushy. She was super speedy with marking assessments and very patient when I was slugging along at a snail’s pace.” Christie Williams, Short Story Writing Course, February 2012

“I loved it. It was a great course with detailed feedback from the tutor who was very knowledgeable about the industry. Fiona was great with giving feedback and motivating me to write.” Lekha Gosai, Write a Great Press Release, February 2012

“I found the course to be a very positive and rewarding experience. The exercises were thought-provoking and helpful. I particularly enjoyed the process of writing and re-writing complete scenes for the final exercise. Helen's feedback helped me focus on structuring and polishing my stories to get the best out of them. I've learnt a great deal about the process of writing short scenes and stories.” Janette Stratton, Advanced Creative Writing Course, February 2012

“What a learning experience! I loved doing this course and learnt such a lot. Helen was an excellent tutor and gave me incredible advice. I will be doing the advanced course later in the year.” Janine du Preez, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2012

Writing a book seemed overwhelming but with the proper material and guidance from a tutor, the process was a lot less stressful than I anticipated. It was highly enjoyable and I have learnt valuable skills. Helen became more of a mentor and she went out of her way to help me. She was very encouraging and patient, she gave me the opportunity to explore my creative side. I looked forward to receiving each new module. I feel more confident in my writing skills thanks to Helen's guidance. The course exceeded my expectations, it was a fantastic experience. I recommend the Writers' College to budding writers. Samantha Carroll, Write a Children’s Book, February 2012

“A wonderful course! I'm a perfectionist so I would've liked to know what I could do to score more, but other than that it was thoroughly enjoyable and informative. Helen was extremely helpful and very clear with instructions and criticism; she didn't make any genre restrictions and encouraged me to simply speak with my own voice. The course met my objectives perhaps even more than I had in mind! It was an invaluable experience. Anyone can benefit from a course at The Writers’ College and it will open up new doors for them.” Gratia-Mari Joubert, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2012

“A wonderfully positive experience. This course improved my writing, it gave me confidence to tell people I write and I now share my work with others. I was a bit sceptical about doing an on-line course, fearing a lack of the "hands-on" approach but my tutor Helen Brain quickly put those fears to rest. Helen’s replies followed swiftly with excellent feedback. Course material and completion requirements were delivered promptly, I found them informative and to the point. I loved doing this course with Helen and hope enrol for the Advanced Creative Writing Course. This course helped my writing tremendously. I'm recommending the Writers’ College to all.” Karin Lamprecht, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012

“It was a wonderful experience. I loved that I was able to go at my own pace. My tutor Helen was detailed in her feedback and if I did something well, she would tell me. It was an amazing course and definitely met my objectives. I learned a lot and had fun at the same time.” Michael Mountain, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012
“The course is well conceived, challenging and is backed up by an experienced tutor. Helen skilfully and accurately diagnosed a very common writing problem from the exercises I completed, namely that my prose was overwritten and a shade purple. No one had told me that before, I found it so valuable. That alone was worth the price of the course, not to mention all the other valuable insights I gained. It was exactly what I wanted to take my writing to the next level and now I hope to see my work published. Overall, it was an enjoyable, apprentice-style course that has challenged me and equipped me with practical writing tools.” Andy Evans, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012

“The course was informative and I feel I've learnt a lot. I found the course comfortable. It was easy enough to do without feeling the need to give up, yet challenging enough not to be boring. The experience with my lecturer was fantastic, I hope in future I can work with a lecturer equally as great and helpful. I was happy with the level of criticism, it was constructive and encouraging. The course has taught me a lot about creative writing. Overall, I found the experience at the Writers' College enjoyable. The College seems very well organised and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about writing.” Monica Terlouw, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012

“It was a great experience, and I'll definitely refer my friends to you. The course was easy to follow with great notes and good feedback. My lecturer was friendly and willing to help whenever I needed it. I could see where I went wrong and how to fix my mistakes. Looking forward to the next course.” Kathleen Kriel, Writing for Social Media, January 2012

“The course taught me all that I wanted to know to fine-tune using the different social media applications and made me more confident in fully applying them to my social and business network. Course content is applicable to the field and very easy to follow and complete. My tutor had very good knowledge of the field, was helpful to assist and very approachable.” Morne Smith, Writing for Social Media, January 2012

“I found the course far better than I expected and very worthwhile. I found Helen Brain very helpful and encouraging. I feel that I've learnt a lot from her and for that I am very thankful.” Daniel Coe, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012

“Fantastic [course]. I learned a great deal, had fun and wrote a scene that my children have read and want to know what happens next. It made me write everyday which I loved. It was scary to show myself but exciting to watch my progress and self confidence grow. To have someone help shape my writing and be honest with me was invaluable. Helen's constructive criticism has already become lasting guidance for me. Helen's comments at times made me blush with a Homer Simpson "Doh" at mistakes I made but also laugh at myself too. She was honest, encouraging and at the same time strict which was a very good thing.” Lucie McIntosh, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012

“The course was challenging for me, since I'm more into writing novels, but I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal. Ginny is simply great! She's right to the point yet kind and inspirational! Gives you a lot of advice and courage. She's a great writer herself and an excellent tutor; it's sad that the course came to an end.” Natashja Singleton, Short Story Writing for Magazines, January 2012

“I have learnt so many lessons while doing the course. I think I had one of the most brilliant tutors there is teaching on this subject. Alex was so warm and honest and gave me freedom to express myself. Her comments were always honest and helpful. I feel like I can write because of the Writers College and Alex Smith, it is an experience I will carry with me forever.” Chantelle, Write a Novel Course, January 2012

“Absolutely wonderful course, I got far more from the course than I expected. What a privilege to learn from someone like Don Pinnock, who I regard as one of the best writers in the industry. His positive feedback and constructive criticism will always stay with me. He is one of those people who knows just how to get the best out of his students. A wonderful experience. I cannot wait to enrol for another course!” Hannelie van As, Travel Writing Course, January 2012
“I loved it! It was everything I was looking for in a course. It was well designed to step a person through the basics and grow in their ability. Helen is superb! She gave excellent feedback and is upfront about your shortfalls, which is necessary for growth. I found NZ Writers' College highly professional and it met all my expectations in a writing course. I have already signed up for another course.” Catherine Myers, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012

“I loved the course. I found it extremely helpful in terms of guidance and tips with regards to the industry. The logical flow of the course modules in terms of putting an article together really mapped out the necessary process for me and the modules themselves were structured really well. I loved the additional articles and example excerpts and found they really clarified the modules for me. Don was very prompt with responses and feedback - so much so that he gave me no time to have a drink between submissions and receiving the next module! He helped me greatly in terms of weaknesses in my writing and has given me the tools to write with a lot more confidence.” Leandre Jacobs, Travel Writing Course, January 2012
