“I found the course to be very satisfying. I believe I learnt some very valuable things.” Anthony Eschner, Introduction To Poetry, March 2013“My experience was great. I have not done any kind of course since school. It refreshed my writing skills and boosted my confidence, which I needed. I received great feedback from my tutor; it was honest and helpful. It was quite a challenge at times but overall it was an excellent course.” Melissa Graham, Basics of Creative Writing, March 2013 “Doing this course is something I would recommend to anyone who wants to grasp the mechanics of creating a solid script. The course without a doubt met my objectives. The professionalism, communication, support and encouragement from The Writers’ College is second to none.” Steve Rock, Scriptwriting, March 2013 “I would describe the course as tough and challenging for someone with no writing background, but manageable if you work consistently. It is a really comprehensive course for anyone who wants to try their hand at writing and it’s a brilliant way of studying from home. It was a pleasure to have Tracey Hawthorne as my tutor. She gave me very constructive criticism and insightful ideas, and modules were always marked in one day. One of the last modules was tough and unexpected but so interesting and important for journalism today. From signing up to completion, everything at the Writers’ College runs smoothly and efficiently. I will certainly recommend the College to anyone wishing to write from the comfort of their home.” Carol Foonk, Magazine Journalism, March 2013 “I have felt extremely encouraged to write by doing this course. I found my tutor Owen Bullock helpful and available, supportive and encouraging and also able to give feedback about things that I needed to develop.” Susan Green, Introduction to Poetry, March 2013 “I found the course informative, helpful and inspiring. Alex Smith was always available and quick to answer any questions; she was very supportive throughout. The course more than met my objectives. My overall experience with The Writers’ College was a very positive one. Now I truly feel I'm a writer.” Karin Noll, Write a Novel, March 2013 ![]() “The course was enjoyable, practical and motivational. However, it is not an easy journey; the lecturer pushes you to achieve a high level of writing proficiency. Helen Brain was a no-nonsense lecturer. She straightened me out on several issues; I enjoyed working with her. I feel more confident in my writing now; I would strongly recommend the course and Helen to anyone.” Thomas King, Basics of Creative Writing, March 2013 “I enjoyed the course, learnt a lot and gained confidence in my writing. My tutor gave excellent guidance, she was very knowledgeable and very helpful.” llse van der Merwe, Write a Novel, March 2013 “It was overall a great learning experience; there were so many new things I was taught. Tracey walked every step of the way with me. She shared so much of her knowledge and wisdom that I got to learn as much, if not more, from her as from the notes. I only had brief contact with Nichola for the last module, but she was as enthusiastic and helpful as Tracey. I have never done a course before that didn't bore me after a while; I think The Writers’ College have a winning formula. I thought of the college as a friend that was there for me every step of the way. Being comfortable in a learning environment always makes it easier to absorb more information and provides an opportunity to perform your best. The course was worth every cent! Thank you.” Ferdie du Toit, Magazine Journalism, March 2013 “The course opened up a whole new world for me. I've learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Karen is the ideal tutor - her patience is unlimited and her knowledge of her subject is formidable. She was always there to advise and motivate me, but at the same time she encouraged me to find out things for myself. It was a very professional course, run by a very professional organisation. I can heartily recommend it!” Lynn Smith, Writing for the Web, February 2013 “The course was such a great introduction to magazine journalism; excellent course content, with excellent tutors, and great opportunities to get published. I also appreciated how much of a platform The Writers’ College created, to educate ourselves further with the extra resources and links. Paul was such a great tutor! It is so great that writers can further their education outside of the universities and be offered such great, experienced tutors.” Melissa Parkes, Magazine Journalism, February 2013 “When I started the course, my goal was to begin a book and see it through to the end. My vague knowledge of how to do this was clarified by the course notes, but it was the step-by-step process of actually writing a book, and the feedback from my tutor, that I found most valuable. I would never have completed my book without Helen's guidance. She was forthright and challenging; her input insightful. Whenever I felt that my story wasn't good enough - or that I wasn't a good enough writer, she was there to pound me back into shape. Essentially, Helen provided me with the self-confidence to see a story through to its end... and more importantly, the courage to start the next one. I am halfway through my new book and I have Helen to thank for it. Overall, I would describe my experience with the College as absolutely brilliant. I loved the back-and-forth process of feedback and rewriting. I am a MUCH better writer for it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks!” Michelle Randall, Write a Childrens’ Book, February 2013 ![]() “I enjoyed doing the course. The course material in general was easy to follow and very useful. I could fit the writing in around my schedule and it really felt that my work was given individual attention.” Melissa Talago, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2013 “I really enjoyed this course and appreciated the comments from my tutor Helen Brain. Her feedback was both supportive and pointed out important problems with my writing. Helen is a great teacher; she is clearly an experienced writer who knows her subject matter. I really enjoyed the experience and look forward to do further courses with The Writers’ College. I feel much more confident now. I learned, had fun and received valuable feedback. Thanks very much.” Andreas Engelbrech, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2013 “It was a very good course. I told my tutor Helen and she gave me good advice; I could then enjoy my writing again and creativity flowed easily. I might go over my course material again and see what other stories come to me now. Helen was very prompt and helpful. I felt at ease discussing topics with her. She has a wealth of knowledge I'm sure I have barely tapped into. Overall, I would describe the course as being very tough but rewarding.” Michelle Beater, Write a Children’s Book, December 2012 ![]() “I loved this course from beginning to end; it never felt like I was doing work. There was no space wasted on filler content, so it really felt worthwhile. I enjoyed working with Mandy, she was always contactable and I felt that I could ask any questions, even if I felt they might be silly, and she would take them seriously. She helped me understand each module, and provided useful feedback. She even went the extra mile and let me further edit projects that had already been marked so that I could learn from mistakes. Helen was a thoughtful, knowledgeable and supportive tutor; she is very likeable and kind human being.” Brett Shand, Basics of Creative Writing, November 2012 “My experience on the course was mind-blowing - not what I'd expected at all. I was seriously impressed by the thoroughness of the course, the kindness, availability and efficiency of the staff and tutors and overall. I really thrived on the challenge of it all. My tutor Leonie and I clicked straight away, although initially, when I read her profile, I was quite overawed at the prospect of being her student. I needn't have worried. She was warm and encouraging, and I never a bad word from her! She answered a plethora of questions and queries, put up with my objections when I 'knew better' and was always available, with a quick response time. The course was unbelievably thorough, it left nothing out and I refer back to the modules all the time for info and advice. It was a step by step journey from zero to writing an article, and more importantly, informed me about the industry of Magazine Journalism - from what you earn, how to write specs and letters, invoicing, resources for topics, even down to the follow up phone calls!” Tracy Brooks, Magazine Journalism, October 2012 “My experience with the course was invaluable. I learnt so much. The course content and assignments have made me a much stronger writer. My tutor Helen was amazing, incredibly inspiring and insightful. She gave me a different perspective on writing and my final manuscript wouldn't have been half as strong if it wasn't for her; I owe her a lot. The course gave me a different perspective and insight into newsletter writing.” Write Better Newsletters, Lisa Coetzee, October 2012 “The course was a very good introduction to creative writing. It has motivated me to take the Advanced Creative Writing Course. Helen had some spot-on critiques and my writing improved after I followed her suggestions. The many exercises got me writing, instead of just looking at a blank page; I also feel more skilled than I did a few months ago. Overall, I had fun, improved my writing and I look forward to signing up for another course, so I'll just let those facts speak for themselves.” Joshua Smith, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2012 “The course material was brilliant! I found everything helpful and easily applicable to my own writing. I was extremely happy with the entire course. Alex is a wonderful lecturer! Her use of positive criticism was amazing. It helped me approach my editing in a different way. The support she gave me was priceless, it got me through the times when I thought the mountain of writing was too high to climb. I have so many things to say about her, but what I will say is: Thank you Alex! The course objective was a couple of chapters and twenty five thousand words. Three and a half months in, I had hit the mark already. Alex hinted that it would be a shame if I didn't finish my entire first draft of my manuscript before the end of the course. It was a tall order, but before the end I sat with a manuscript of hundred and seventeen thousand words. She helped me achieve above and beyond what I thought I was capable of. I'm happy to say that whatever made me stumble onto your college changed my life, and turned a small hope and dream into a reality.” Omri Pieterse Write a Novel, September 2012

Andie Tane, Advanced Creative Writing, September 2012 “It was a great course. Ginny was excellent. She allowed me to pursue my own agenda whilst keeping me within the confines of the course. It was definitely worth it; you learn all the necessary tools for the trade you’re interested in.” Ursula Smuts, Scriptwriting, September 2012 “This course was a lot of fun and was most comprehensive; I highly recommend it! It provided all the necessary tools for becoming a published travel writer, such as the dos and don'ts for submitting articles to editors, as well as various writing tips and pitfalls which prevent wasting time on unnecessary mistakes. Don was a fantastic and patient mentor! I was very nervous submitting my work to such a well regarded and exceptional writer, but Don encouraged me and kept me going throughout the more complicated sections of the course. I appreciated his honesty and direct approach, but found that he never minded if I queried something or asked for clarity - he shares his experience and knowledge gladly. I have a better understanding of travel writing now, and I am better equipped to set about getting my work published. This is a professional, high quality College that offers slick courses of international standard. The fact that you're mentored by a professional in the field is an added bonus.” Wendy McSeveney, Travel Writing, September 2012 “The course was a great introduction to the world of writing. The course notes were very informative and interesting, and they were written in personable and professional language. I found the most value in the contact I had with my tutor. Lisa was great to work with. She gave me excellent advice and guidance around every corner, with quick feedback and thorough explanations. I learnt so much. The course taught me how to write like a freelance writer, but also how to think like one. I now know what to look for - article ideas and elements in my article. It has been informative, interesting, stimulating and fun. I look forward to the next course I do with the Writers' College.” Atka Young, Magazine Journalism Course, August 2012 “It's such a practical course and I learnt so much from writing so many complete stories. Ginny was always so fast with her feedback, which was always constructive, detailed and honest. She does not only tell you what you're doing wrong, but how you can fix it in a way that suits you and your style best. She was open-minded and a pleasure to trade ideas with! I wanted to overcome the barrier of writing a good story, but not being able to battle it out to create a final, well-rounded product. Doing the course is exactly the boost any aspiring writer needs without being influenced by too much technical detail.” Tania Terblanche, Short Story Writing for Magazines, August 2012 “I enjoyed doing the course. My lecturer was supportive and knowledgeable. Overall I would describe the course as relevant and challenging.” Douw Steyn, Writing for the Web, August 2012 “I found the course exciting and interesting. I never expected to learn as much as I did. Karen Jeynes is an excellent lecturer. The feedback I received from her on assignments was definitely the reason I managed to improve my writing over the six-month period. Karen continually encouraged me and increased my confidence, and I was able to complete the course successfully. Her criticism of work submitted was fair and she gave clear advice on how to overcome the writing deficiencies in my work. Passing the course had a lot to do with her tutoring skills. I will be back next year to enrol for another creative writing course with The Writers’ College.” Marinda Thurston, Scriptwriting Course, August 2012 ![]() “I thought the course would be good, but it turned out to be great! It was fantastic to have Yvonne as my tutor. Her responses to my submitted assignments were lightning-fast and her feedback was frank and encouraging. The course more than met my objectives. I loved it, I learned lots and I will consider doing other courses through the Writers’ College in the future.” Ann Huston, Travel Writing Course, August 2012 “I've caught the writing bug. As far as I know there is no cure - only writing courses to help treat the symptoms. The Basics of Creative Writing Course has provided some relief for now. I’ll be sure to enrol in another course with the Writers' College if my symptoms flare up again. Helen was a wonderful tutor to have. I've come to realise that writing is tough but so rewarding if you stick to it. Helen’s guidance and encouragement kept me motivated and helped me to press on. Doing the course was a wonderful way to get guidance and advice from those who’ve been in the very same beginner shoes I find myself wearing now.” Wanda van der Wath, The Basics of Creative Writing Course, August 2012 "At the beginning of this course I was so hopeless about writing that I really thought I can't be helped. I thought that the only thing that might help is to go and see a psychiatrist to help me remove the chronic writer's block I am sitting with. I thought that I was what Salieri said in Amadeus – why did God give me the desire but not the talent or the creativity? I was useless with The Artist’s Way. I would do two weeks and then just, somehow, stop. I really didn’t expect much from the course. I thought it would teach me a few skills and perhaps scratch the surface of a problem. I didn’t expect what happened. I didn’t expect epiphany after epiphany and to find the actual root of the problem. In fact, right after I paid the fees for the course I thought that it would be a massive waste of money. Well... I don’t know what happened exactly between then and now – it was like a car crash... first I was here, then I was there and then I was thrown out of the car and then it was all over. The point is that today I have ideas. I look with different eyes at the world. I think differently about my thought processes and I actually started writing. I outlined almost the entire plot of a novel. I don’t know what changed. I just know it did. Today, I am not the same person that started this course...and it’s a good thing. At the risk of sounding very soppy: I was brought back to life." Anonymous, Break through your Writing Barriers “It was a fantastic course: very educational and easy to comprehend. Alex was a wonderful tutor. She was very supportive and inspired me to work harder and accomplish more. Deciding to do a writing course with the Writers’ College was the best educational choice I ever made.” Aileen Smith, Write a Novel Course, August 2012 “I have a much better understanding of how things work online, about what works and what doesn’t. I can apply everything I've learned to my website and hopefully future career as a writer. Karen was very nice, friendly and always ready to help. Kind words were always inspirational! The Writers' College is the best place I've ever found online. This was my second completed course at the College and I plan do many more courses through them.” Natashja Singleton, Writing for the Web Course, August 2012 “I found the course to be very good. I am a professional writer in the advertising industry; the course taught me new things and the exercises were helpful in improving some of my social media skills. Karen was a great tutor. She lives in the social media world and it shows. Her insight on the subject matter was obvious from the get-go and it was a pleasure to receive her even-handed, constructive feedback. The Writers' College provided me with valuable knowledge and tools I needed to grow professionally. The entire process, from registration through the learning component to completion was easy and efficient!” James Davie, Writing for Social Media Course, July 2012 ![]()
“It was a fun and enlightening experience. Helen Brain was most encouraging; her critique was always valid and helpful. The course met my objectives; in retrospect I could have possibly tried a little harder but I have renewed confidence in my writing and I learned some very useful storytelling techniques. Overall, I was very pleased with the course. I would definitely recommend The Writers’ College to anyone looking to enhance their writing skills.” Katherine Otty, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012
“It was a very good experience; I learnt a lot and strengthened my weaknesses. I also learnt how to edit a scene completely. My tutor Helen was very good; she was blunt and explained my mistakes to me. She motivated me and was patient with me. I enjoyed the feedback and the motivation. The course met all of my objectives; I got a lot better at being able to describe things. It was hard work but in the end it was worth it.” Zoe Garden, Creative Writing for High School Students Course, July 2012 “It was a very positive and encouraging experience. Doing the course has made me much more confident and I now have faith in my ability. The experience with my tutor was excellent. Sonny marked my work often within 24 hours. Her feedback was clear, constructive and her advice was given at my pace. With every module, her advice was above and beyond what I anticipated. In areas where I struggled, particularly with formatting, Sonny gave me extra support. Overall it was a very rewarding experience.” Christine Wardle, The Write a Novel Course, July 2012 “The course opened my eyes to a new world of writing. It was a challenging yet rewarding course; it exceeded my expectations in all aspects. I enjoyed the fact that it was so practical. Karen is a great tutor! She replied promptly to my assignments and any queries I submitted. She provided valuable feedback - it was evident that she has much knowledge of this industry. I would definitely look out for any other course offered by her. My experience at the Writers' College was certainly a very positive one from beginning to end. I will definitely recommend the institution to anyone interested in completing a writing course.” Renate Venier, Writing for the Web Course, July 2012 “I enjoyed the course - it was fun but challenging at the same time. I will recommend the course to anyone who is willing to learn, whether it’s with putting yourself out there in interviews or just writing in a different style. My tutor was always there to answer any questions I had. When I was stuck with what to write about, Lisa was always ready with suggestions. The Writers’ College has taught me a lot about the industry of writing; it absolutely met my objectives! I have grown as a writer for sure.” Grace van der Westhuizen, The Basics of Feature Writing Course, July 2012 ![]() “The course notes were thorough, informative and relevant. Feedback was prompt and helpful, and Don was encouraging. I would describe the course as challenging in the best and most useful kind of way!” Helen Wallace, Travel Writing Course, July 2012 “Mandy was always approachable and willing to offer friendly and professional advice. Her feedback on all assignments was clear, constructive and insightful.” Daryl Brown, Copywriting Course, July 2012 “I very much enjoyed the practical assignments; they gave me the opportunity to practice my skills. It's one thing to have notes but it adds such meaning when you actually have to apply them. I found my tutor Fiona Walsh to be prompt, considerate and generous. Her feedback after every assignment was always constructive and insightful; it gave me the tools to improve my writing. I found this methodology invaluable. Thank you. I am considering taking the Writing for Social Media Course later this year.” Jann Robertson, Write a Great Press Release Course, July 2012 “I had a lot of fun with the course; I set out to learn how to write and I did. The notes were informative and gave practical examples for all the topics. Helen has so much knowledge, it would be difficult not to learn anything from her. Her feedback was always insightful and it made me look at my work in a different way. The Writers’ College gives anyone the opportunity to start learning. I really believe that anyone would benefit from doing one of their many courses. I'm grateful for all the knowledge I have gained.” Werner Diedericks, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012 “The course was fantastic, very professional, of high quality and I really learned a lot. It was well worth it! My experience with my tutor was very good - it was an honour to have Mike teach me as he knows the field very well.” Magdel Louw, Write a Novel Course, July 2012 “This course was exactly what I was looking for; it really improved my knowledge of the key components of creative writing. The course notes were fantastic - clear, concise and easy to follow. Helen was fantastic to work with; responsive, friendly and her comments showed me that she had really taken the time to read what I had written and knew her stuff! I would love to have her as a tutor again. The course met all my objectives; it was absolutely great. Thanks for your flexibility - the Writers’ College, and for working in with my many other commitments and deadlines. I really appreciated this - it made a huge difference to my experience of the course.” Claire Barry, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012 “I was impressed with the volume and depth of the exercises. Some of them were very demanding but they opened my eyes to just how stories are crafted. I've learnt valuable tools to edit my texts and cut them back to what is required to push stories forward without getting lost in long descriptions. Now I feel more confident about the writing process - thank you. With English being my second language, I doubted whether I would be able to write in a way that was acceptable to a native speaker but Helen gave me the feeling I could write just as well. She answered all my questions directly and promptly and encouraged me to keep on practising. Thanks to her constructive criticism I understand more about how to build a story and keep the reader's interest. What's more, I've learned a great deal about the English language just by writing and rewriting. The course helped me to be a more confident and inspiring writer.” Guenter Prinesdom, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2012 “It was a concise and thorough course; I learnt a huge amount. I have done three courses with the Writers’ College now and realise I have barely scraped the surface of what I need to do and the journeys I have to go on to become a vaguely useful writer. I never anticipated how challenging flash fiction would be so I would like to do more. Alex rocks; she is calm and collected, which is necessary because I reckon new writers are terribly nervous and emotionally immature about their work. We are like toddlers: we need to be guided into maturity with patience and encouragement. She has a very classical eye which balanced out my tendency to want to break the bank, and in the end, I think that yin-yang was good for my writing. She was professional and a pleasant lady too. I’ll be back to sign up for another course.” Eleanor Talbot, Literary Short Story & Flash Fiction Course, June 2012 "It was an excellent experience. It was hard work but very satisfactory. I enjoyed every moment of writing and learning which says a lot for the course content, subject matter and support. Alex Smith was an absolutely incredible tutor; I could not have wished or asked for anyone better. The course absolutely met my objectives and more. I have completed three courses with The Writers' College now. My initial objective was to learn to write; I needed to put my experiences and stories into writing. I had no idea where to begin or what to look out for. I started with the Basics of Creative Writing Course, then took Advanced Creative Writing and then Novel Writing. It was a magnificent journey. Thank you very much.” Danie Markgraaff, Write a Novel Course, June 2012 “Ginny is an excellent tutor who surpassed my expectations and made it all an enjoyable experience. She offered lots of encouragement, fair evaluations and plenty of tips for improvement. Ginny responded quickly to my emails and assignments (I was anxiously waiting!). I will recommend the Writers’ College to others because of the experience with my tutor. Initially I looked at a cheaper course (based in Sydney), but on reflection I’m glad I chose a course that assigned an individual tutor. I am happy with my experience and may consider taking other courses.” Pamela Ferla, Short Story Writing for Magazines, June 2012 ![]() “I enjoyed the course. I found it challenging. It forced me to think about the way I communicate in the business world. I found Susan to be very fair and professional. She encouraged me to complete the course. The Writers' College and the Business Writing Toolkit Course is of a very high standard.” Tania Pantony, Business Writing Toolkit Course, June 2012 “I loved the experience; I truly feel I learnt so many new and practical writing skills from doing the course. Helen Brain was extremely supportive and constructive with her feedback. I am very happy with my experience with The Writers’ College. I'm currently doing the Advanced Creative Writing Course with Helen - which I guess says it all.” Deborah Forbes, Basics of Creative Writing Course, June 2012 “I've had a wonderful week thanks to being placed as a runner-up in a short story competition: http://www.cazart.co.uk/index.php?page=story&id=346. I really believe that it's a direct result of this course as I'd never have sent it in otherwise.” Norah Jansen, Break through your Writing Barriers, June 2012 “The course has inspired me to become a better writer. With awareness comes opportunity; effort makes it possible. The effort I put in was reflected in my results and I feel my journey is just beginning. I enjoyed my contact with Susan, I believe her personal anecdotal comments brought the course to life and I responded positively to this approach. After having done the course, I am more aware of what I don't know, and I realise the effort I need to put in to achieve my goals. The Writers’ College is a professional provider of writing courses and I am fortunate to have benefited from their service. I have recommended it to others and will continue to do so.” Sheryl Nelley, Writing Coach Course, June 2012 “Overall, I would describe the course as fantastic. The most useful part was the feedback I received from Helen. I knew most of the content but the application of it to my own children's book was what I needed help with. Helen was so helpful; I feel like she became a friend and mentor on the journey.” Lyn McNamee, Writing Books For Children – Part One, June 2012 “The Writers’ College offers first class courses with first class lecturers. I was guided step by step throughout the writing process and the various techniques and genres that go into writing a novel were explained. I liked the assignments in particular and the clear structure of the course. I was also impressed by the information provided about the publishing procedure and the many links to take the manuscript further. Alex Smith was a wonderfully supportive lecturer; without her constant encouragement I would not have finished the course.” Elizabeth MacDonald, Write a Novel Course, June 2012 “The course was insightful. Alex was a great help; she gave very constructive feedback.” Tjaart Fourie, Write a Novel Course, June 2012 “Doing the course was an amazing and empowering experience; it was a tremendous opportunity for learning and growth. What I really appreciated about my tutor Karen, apart from her expertise and love for what she does, was her support and encouragement. Without her continuous motivation, I know I would not have stayed on the course. Her positiveness has given me a new lease on life. The course met all my objectives and more; before the course I was unaware of how search engines worked or what was needed to make a website work. I am very happy with my decision to have gone on the course.” Zulfah Abrahams, Writing for the Web Course, June 2012 “The course was extremely helpful. Helen Brain is a good teacher; she was positive and supportive and she gave a lot of good advice. Overall, it was a very positive experience and it has encouraged me to do more writing.” Joan Rotherham, Basics of Creative Writing Course, June 2012. “My experience at The Writers’ College was very positive. The course was very enjoyable and a useful experience; it helped me identify gaps in my writing. The course was all about tutor-student interaction; a very positive tutor-student relationship was created which allowed me to experiment and grow. The course absolutely met my objectives; some of the assignments were perhaps a bit too easy, but all in all the general experience was a positive one. The administrative interactions were efficient and the electronic medium was extremely useful. The Writers’ College has mastered online courses and I'd recommend them to anyone who would like to improve their writing skills while not being bound to attend lectures.” Sanchia Lubbe, Writing Coach Course, May 2012 “My experience was excellent; I learnt a lot from the course. I finally feel confident that I am able to complete a manuscript for publication. Louis was an excellent tutor. He managed to keep me on the right track as I have the tendency to sometimes lose focus. I feel my writing has improved a lot with his guidance. It was an excellent experience and I was assisted by very efficient people.” Erika Frouws, Write a Novel Course, May 2012 “I found the course interesting; I have developed skills in creative writing which I appreciate. My tutor Helen was quick to respond and accommodating (particularly with my time management towards the end of the course). I appreciated her helpful feedback and encouragement along the way. I am pleased to say I gained confidence in my writing from her feedback. Overall, I felt the College and its courses were very accessible and I received good quality training.” Sue Mitchell, Basics of Creative Writing, May 2012 “I loved the balance of theory and practice, the personal contact with a tutor and the independence of distance learning. I always looked forward to my next module and found the course notes and library articles engaging and interesting. I often thought how lucky I was to have Paul Smith as my tutor. I admired his teaching and writing skills, I appreciated his honesty and sensitivity and his generosity of time. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him.” Janet Hart, Magazine Journalism, May 2012 “Overall, the course was a pleasurable and insightful experience. The notes really drew you in; you were never unsure where the module was going or what was needed from you. The worksheets got you thinking and allowed for creative thinking. Mandy was extremely encouraging, she is obviously a talented individual. She had excellent feedback on how to improve and better your ideas. I was very impressed at every level; from admin to notes to my tutor and to the understanding of the course coordinators.” Linda Jooste, The Copywriting Course, May 2012 “I enjoyed doing the course a lot; I'm more confident now with my English writing. English is not my first language. I wanted to try something different to improve my writing, vocabulary and even grammar skills and this course absolutely met my objectives. My tutor was always very clear and respectful with her comments. The course was fun, challenging and I learnt a lot.” Helena Cuesta, Writing Coach Course, May 2012 “The course was everything I expected and more. It was enjoyable, entertaining and a fun way of learning. The experience I had with my lecturer was absolutely perfect; Sally was always kind and helpful and supportive. The course was informative and helped me achieve what I wanted to achieve. It was a good experience, one that I would love to do again and one that I would recommend to others.” Monica Terlouw, Break Through Your Writing Barriers, May 2012 “It was an excellent course; I learnt more than I expected. Ginny was terrific, she made it fun and had very insightful comments and great advice.” Lawrence Shaffer, Short Story Writing, April 2012 “I found the course very informative. I highly recommend the course to everyone responsible for writing articles for newsletters. I liked the approach to the assignments; the fact that I had a deadline motivated me to structure time in order to complete them. The assignments were practical and challenging. Susan was extremely friendly and helpful. Her honest praise, feedback and critique was much appreciated. She went the extra mile wherever possible. The course exceeded my expectations. The material inspired me with many ideas for our company newsletter and I have obtained positive feedback from colleagues as to the improvement of my writing skills. I used to see writing as a daunting task and honestly did not know how to approach writing an article. Now I view it as exciting and am motivated to push myself to write good articles for my company. Studying a hands-on practical course specific to my requirements through The Writers’ College was a pleasant and gratifying experience.” Mandy Thackwray, Write Better Newsletters, April 2012 “The course was hard work but well worth it. It was an emotional roller coaster ride; it tested my creative abilities and self-discipline. Mike gave excellent feedback. I think he expected me to write a crime thriller while I wanted to write a novel about crime and things other than those found in a conventional thriller, i.e. how the protagonist grew psychologically and about relationships in general. I had done the Short Story Writing Course through the College which was most successful; I have subsequently had a few short stories published. I am better at that than writing a novel! The fact that my skills need honing is not the course's fault; it taught me the necessary tools I needed to write a novel. Overall, it was an enjoyable learning curve.” Ann Hoffman, Write a Novel Course, April 2012 “I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The course was specific to my objective which was to improve my fiction writing. It was good to visit the basics of writing again and give concepts some formality and structure. It also expanded my knowledge of ways to gather material. I was particularly glad to use some of my existing fiction in some of the exercises which gave me "double" feedback; it also made the course and Helen's comments more relevant. Helen was a very gentle and encouraging tutor which was great when you are exposing yourself to criticism and critique for the first time. She was most gracious as I bombarded her with assignments with no break in between! The course showed me I had a good grasp of what is expected of a writer and I feel more confident in going forward. The writing community was so different to my usual communities but I felt welcome and was very appreciative of the encouragement I received from administrators and course tutors.” Fiona Coward, Basics of Creative Writing, April 2012 “If you want to improve your writing skills, The Writers’ College is the place to go. The tutors are friendly and they treat you as a real writer. The course material was informative and clear! definitely a plus. Alex was so patient with me; I learnt skills that enabled me to rework my entire novel and maybe publish it in the near future. Alex inspired me when I was feeling down-and-out and I have taken a lot of advice with me. I will most certainly invite her to my first signing (laugh out loud). The course met my objectives; my finished novel was 60,000 words and I am still rewriting it again and again.” Michelle Randall, Write a Novel Course, April 2012 “I was really pleased with the overall experience, thank you. Ginny was excellent and very encouraging. I feel more informed about my writing and motivated to carry on.” Kay Wilson, Short Story Course, April 2012 “The course was stimulating and motivating. Although correspondence was brief, I built a respect for Helen based on the good outcomes of her advice. It felt good being under her tutelage. The course met my objectives; I am somewhat more confident of my abilities. It helped me see my work more critically; learning how to spot the dross has been very important.” Bill McAndie, Basics of Creative Writing, April 2012 “I gave a 100% and got back 500%. It exceeded all my expectations. Alex Smith is an exceptional tutor. From Module 1 she had her finger on the pulse and understood my creative vision. I was extremely impressed by her professionalism and depth of knowledge. Not only did I grow in skill and confidence but I was able to learn on many levels, which made it all the more enjoyable. I owe you Alex! The course met all my objectives. I've been wanting to write a novel for 30 years and could never get further than a couple of rough notes; now I have 48 000 words under my belt and plan to have a finished manuscript by June 2013. It has been an exciting journey, and I'm extremely satisfied with what I've achieved. Thank you! I wish I'd discovered The Writers' College years ago.”Diane Cursons, Write A Novel Course, April 2012 “It's ironic but words really can't describe the phenomenal experience. From the help and support of Koos and Nichola to my tutor Alex, it has been sublime and life changing. Alex is a rockstar. She is amazing and supportive and honestly she is the reason that I'm taking the follow-up course in September. For years I wanted to do a course but financially I couldn't manage. That's why I want to say thank you to Mavis Bleazard for the bursary that allowed one of my greatest dreams to come true and to the College and Alex for the amazing warmth and support.” Mark Scheepers, Write a Novel Course, April 2012 “I didn't know anything about fiction writing when I started. I was advised to do the basic course and take it from there. I took the risk; if it wasn't for the quality of the course, building up from modules 1 to 12 and text instalments, I wouldn't have been successful. Alex was always only an email away to respond to issues; sometimes it felt as though I was her only pupil. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have passed the course, never mind with distinction. It absolutely exceeded my expectations. Now I am confident I will get a book published within a year. It was the most creative and satisfying study experience at a professional level I have done for at least ten years. Thank you.” Louis Wiid, Write a Novel Course, 2012 “My experience on the course was great. The constructive criticism helped me hone my skills. My tutor’s promptness was usually great. Her comments on my work motivated and inspired me greatly; any criticism she had was fair and always right. The course was awesome, I would seriously consider doing another.” Laura-May Randell, Introduction to Poetry, April 2012 “I learnt a lot in short space of time, which was fantastic. Karen was very approachable and always replied promptly. This was important to me because I needed to wait for a response before I could continue working on an assignment.” Micharn Pollock, Scriptwriting Course, April 2012 “The teaching was great, I just need to motivate myself more to write every day and consult online documentation. Helen was more than willing to mark my work speedily as I pushed the boundary of my deadline. I really appreciated that. Online communication is an excellent method for teaching writing; I look forward to more courses and more good experiences.” Manuela Tyne, Basics of Creative Writing Course, April 2012 “My objective was to put together a solid, professional groundwork for creative writing and to tack a certificate onto my résumé; the course certainly excelled at both. The course gives a very solid foundation for storytelling. The course certainly succeeds at building and applying the basics of creative writing and covering all of the essentials. Helen's great fun to work with and relates to a teenager's worldview surprisingly well. She was always available and I could expect a response to any question within a day or so. Feedback was concise and had the sort of direct quality I wanted; I would always know exactly what to improve on from the feedback.” Lane Tao, Creative Writing for High School Students, April 2012 ![]()
“I am so excited to reach the end of my novel - something I never thought would happen. I now have a polished story that I am happy with. Even if it never brings me in a cent, it proves I can do it, I can finish a book. The prospect of starting the next one doesn't feel so onerous now. The course was well worth the money; it was wonderful to have someone looking over my shoulder while I wrote, to gently shift me in the right direction with the lightest touch and keep me focused on the story. Helen gave perfect advice - everything she said was pitched to push me further, make me think and drive me to write better. I have her voice in my head while I'm writing now and it's helping to make my stories come alive - deep and grateful thanks. The Writers' College has a professional, personal approach that will extend any writer at any stage of their career.” Irene Hamer, Write a Children's Book, March 2012
“I believe I am now adequately trained and equipped to write publishable articles. I expected a basic course that would serve more as an introduction to Magazine Journalism, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the course offered much more than that. It all depends on how much you are willing to put in! Tracey deserves a huge thank you. Her feedback was always straight-forward and frank, but never too critical. Her approach gave me the confidence to submit my assignments with knowledge that I could rely on her objective feedback to improve my work. She responded very promptly to my submissions and provided me with valuable information whenever I asked for it. She is definitely a natural tutor. I always wondered whether I really had the ability to write anything decent; The Writers' College and my tutor taught me and showed me that I did. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to venture into the field of Magazine Journalism.” Christine Vorster, Magazine Journalism, March 2012 “It was a valuable course that delivered what it promised. It taught me the Basics of Creative Writing in a very simple, yet effective way. Helen is extremely wise, patient and a helpful tutor. She inspires would-be writers by providing feedback which is both honest and encouraging. I've never signed up for any sort of writing course before (nor have I done a lot of writing) but after being guided by such a brilliant teacher I feel compelled to continue writing. The Writers’ College offers quality one-on-one tutoring to students with talented, wise and accomplished writers willing to share their valuable knowledge with you.” Suzanne Kolaczynski, Basics of Creative Writing Course, March 2012 “It was a challenging but valuable course for would-be writers. Ray did a good job. His support on the "bad bits" was excellent and his constructive comments were too; his praise for the "good bits" was genuine and sincere. The course met my objectives; it took me from where I had been when I left school and gave me an opportunity to learn how to study again. I praise the help I received from Koos in learning how to set up the exercises, it must have been very frustrating for him! I also praise the high quality tutelage from Ray .” Janet Green, Advanced Grammar Course for Writers, March 2012 “The course can be described as enriching, challenging, inspiring, life changing and addictive. Helen was a wonderful tutor, inspiring, encouraging and helpful. She pushed and challenged me, she didn’t allow me to rest on my laurels. She gave me confidence to try new things, take risks and grow. The course really helped develop my writing skills; I thought I was a good writer before, but now I realise I have much to learn. Taking the course has started me in the right direction, thank you.” Andie Tane, Basics of Creative Writing Course, March 2012 ![]()
“I recommend this course to anyone who wants to discover if they have talent to write. I learnt a lot more than I expected. After doing the course, I am more confident in knowing where my writing career is headed and which areas of my writing I need to work on. I have a greater understanding of the mechanics of Novel Writing. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor than Henrietta; she knows her subject. She conveyed feedback in an easy to understand manner and in a very gentle way made me aware of my weaker points, where I can improve, and of course, where my stronger points are. I have gained valuable knowledge just from her comments and in the same breath she has opened my eyes to how much I still have to learn.” Ezelle Louw, Write a Novel, February 2012
“The course was really fantastic; I learnt a lot of new skills and feel like my writing has improved dramatically. The most important thing for me, was that because I work full time for an online company I was able to apply each assignment to my current marketing objectives. Karen was great to work with and was very understanding of my situation and having to do things differently to how some of the assignments had specified so I appreciated the individual approach of the course. It was a valuable learning experience for anyone wanting to learn at their own pace.” Briony Fickling, Writing for the Web, February 2012 “I was really impressed with the practicality of the course as opposed to it being a whole lot of theory. I found Karin extremely helpful and always willing to make herself available to help me. The feedback I received from Karin and Tracey was really good and I will use it now for submitting my very first article! Karin was very approachable and kept me motivated throughout. Her passion for what she does is very evident, she has inspired me to make the most out of what I learnt. I am very impressed that in only 6 months, the course and my lecturer were able to adequately arm me to go out into the real world in my first solo attempt at writing for a magazine. I highly recommend that anybody who is even thinking about doing some writing, sign up for a Writers’ College course that interests them.” Glenn Weldon, Magazine Journalism, February 2012 ![]()
“The Writers’ College was the only company that offered such specific courses combined with flexibility. My objective was to get back into writing, finish some pieces and improve my writing confidence. I've achieved all of these and I hope to have my first sale to a magazine in the near future. It was a good experience and a valuable learning curve. Ginny was awesome! She gave great feedback and was very supportive and motivating without being pushy. She was super speedy with marking assessments and very patient when I was slugging along at a snail’s pace.” Christie Williams, Short Story Writing Course, February 2012
“I loved it. It was a great course with detailed feedback from the tutor who was very knowledgeable about the industry. Fiona was great with giving feedback and motivating me to write.” Lekha Gosai, Write a Great Press Release, February 2012 “I found the course to be a very positive and rewarding experience. The exercises were thought-provoking and helpful. I particularly enjoyed the process of writing and re-writing complete scenes for the final exercise. Helen's feedback helped me focus on structuring and polishing my stories to get the best out of them. I've learnt a great deal about the process of writing short scenes and stories.” Janette Stratton, Advanced Creative Writing Course, February 2012 “What a learning experience! I loved doing this course and learnt such a lot. Helen was an excellent tutor and gave me incredible advice. I will be doing the advanced course later in the year.” Janine du Preez, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2012 Writing a book seemed overwhelming but with the proper material and guidance from a tutor, the process was a lot less stressful than I anticipated. It was highly enjoyable and I have learnt valuable skills. Helen became more of a mentor and she went out of her way to help me. She was very encouraging and patient, she gave me the opportunity to explore my creative side. I looked forward to receiving each new module. I feel more confident in my writing skills thanks to Helen's guidance. The course exceeded my expectations, it was a fantastic experience. I recommend the Writers' College to budding writers. Samantha Carroll, Write a Children’s Book, February 2012 “A wonderful course! I'm a perfectionist so I would've liked to know what I could do to score more, but other than that it was thoroughly enjoyable and informative. Helen was extremely helpful and very clear with instructions and criticism; she didn't make any genre restrictions and encouraged me to simply speak with my own voice. The course met my objectives perhaps even more than I had in mind! It was an invaluable experience. Anyone can benefit from a course at The Writers’ College and it will open up new doors for them.” Gratia-Mari Joubert, Basics of Creative Writing, February 2012 “A wonderfully positive experience. This course improved my writing, it gave me confidence to tell people I write and I now share my work with others. I was a bit sceptical about doing an on-line course, fearing a lack of the "hands-on" approach but my tutor Helen Brain quickly put those fears to rest. Helen’s replies followed swiftly with excellent feedback. Course material and completion requirements were delivered promptly, I found them informative and to the point. I loved doing this course with Helen and hope enrol for the Advanced Creative Writing Course. This course helped my writing tremendously. I'm recommending the Writers’ College to all.” Karin Lamprecht, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012 “It was a wonderful experience. I loved that I was able to go at my own pace. My tutor Helen was detailed in her feedback and if I did something well, she would tell me. It was an amazing course and definitely met my objectives. I learned a lot and had fun at the same time.” Michael Mountain, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012 ![]()
“The course is well conceived, challenging and is backed up by an experienced tutor. Helen skilfully and accurately diagnosed a very common writing problem from the exercises I completed, namely that my prose was overwritten and a shade purple. No one had told me that before, I found it so valuable. That alone was worth the price of the course, not to mention all the other valuable insights I gained. It was exactly what I wanted to take my writing to the next level and now I hope to see my work published. Overall, it was an enjoyable, apprentice-style course that has challenged me and equipped me with practical writing tools.” Andy Evans, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012
“The course was informative and I feel I've learnt a lot. I found the course comfortable. It was easy enough to do without feeling the need to give up, yet challenging enough not to be boring. The experience with my lecturer was fantastic, I hope in future I can work with a lecturer equally as great and helpful. I was happy with the level of criticism, it was constructive and encouraging. The course has taught me a lot about creative writing. Overall, I found the experience at the Writers' College enjoyable. The College seems very well organised and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about writing.” Monica Terlouw, Basics of Creative Writing, January 2012 “It was a great experience, and I'll definitely refer my friends to you. The course was easy to follow with great notes and good feedback. My lecturer was friendly and willing to help whenever I needed it. I could see where I went wrong and how to fix my mistakes. Looking forward to the next course.” Kathleen Kriel, Writing for Social Media, January 2012 “The course taught me all that I wanted to know to fine-tune using the different social media applications and made me more confident in fully applying them to my social and business network. Course content is applicable to the field and very easy to follow and complete. My tutor had very good knowledge of the field, was helpful to assist and very approachable.” Morne Smith, Writing for Social Media, January 2012 “I found the course far better than I expected and very worthwhile. I found Helen Brain very helpful and encouraging. I feel that I've learnt a lot from her and for that I am very thankful.” Daniel Coe, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012 “Fantastic [course]. I learned a great deal, had fun and wrote a scene that my children have read and want to know what happens next. It made me write everyday which I loved. It was scary to show myself but exciting to watch my progress and self confidence grow. To have someone help shape my writing and be honest with me was invaluable. Helen's constructive criticism has already become lasting guidance for me. Helen's comments at times made me blush with a Homer Simpson "Doh" at mistakes I made but also laugh at myself too. She was honest, encouraging and at the same time strict which was a very good thing.” Lucie McIntosh, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012 “The course was challenging for me, since I'm more into writing novels, but I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal. Ginny is simply great! She's right to the point yet kind and inspirational! Gives you a lot of advice and courage. She's a great writer herself and an excellent tutor; it's sad that the course came to an end.” Natashja Singleton, Short Story Writing for Magazines, January 2012 “I have learnt so many lessons while doing the course. I think I had one of the most brilliant tutors there is teaching on this subject. Alex was so warm and honest and gave me freedom to express myself. Her comments were always honest and helpful. I feel like I can write because of the Writers College and Alex Smith, it is an experience I will carry with me forever.” Chantelle, Write a Novel Course, January 2012 “Absolutely wonderful course, I got far more from the course than I expected. What a privilege to learn from someone like Don Pinnock, who I regard as one of the best writers in the industry. His positive feedback and constructive criticism will always stay with me. He is one of those people who knows just how to get the best out of his students. A wonderful experience. I cannot wait to enrol for another course!” Hannelie van As, Travel Writing Course, January 2012 ![]()
“I loved it! It was everything I was looking for in a course. It was well designed to step a person through the basics and grow in their ability. Helen is superb! She gave excellent feedback and is upfront about your shortfalls, which is necessary for growth. I found NZ Writers' College highly professional and it met all my expectations in a writing course. I have already signed up for another course.” Catherine Myers, Basics of Creative Writing Course, January 2012
“I loved the course. I found it extremely helpful in terms of guidance and tips with regards to the industry. The logical flow of the course modules in terms of putting an article together really mapped out the necessary process for me and the modules themselves were structured really well. I loved the additional articles and example excerpts and found they really clarified the modules for me. Don was very prompt with responses and feedback - so much so that he gave me no time to have a drink between submissions and receiving the next module! He helped me greatly in terms of weaknesses in my writing and has given me the tools to write with a lot more confidence.” Leandre Jacobs, Travel Writing Course, January 2012 “Overall, I enjoyed the course structure and content. I liked that I could work at my own pace. Mandy was very thorough with her feedback, as well as being friendly and helpful. The course opened my eyes and gave me confidence to pursue this dream.” Wanda van der Wath, Writing Coach Course, December 2011 ![]() “The course is well worked-out and deadlines are within attainable time frames. The lecturer set a high standard for the work, but also offered sufficient advice when it was necessary. The Writers' College has given me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and experience, without the inconvenience of attending classes or wasting time on subjects that were unnecessary.” Karen Joubert, Travel Writing Course, November 2011 "First of all Don Pinnock was fantastic. There were moments when I was ready to throw in the towel, but his honest critiques and gentle encouragement kept me going. He is a marvellous man! It was no walk in the park; very challenging and enlightening. Would love to do it all over again." Janine Grobler, Travel Writing Course, November 2011 "I really enjoyed the course. It was fun, challenging and critical. Usually online courses aren't very personal and lack quality feedback, but this was not the case with the Writer's College. I received expert advice and guidelines. It was a quick and effective way to learn everything I needed to in order to realise my dream and become more confident. I'd recommend it to anyone and would do a different course in the future, too. I knew every second that I was in good hands and working under someone extremely talented and experienced. I also appreciated the bluntness and humour of my tutor. I know that he is a very busy man and I often thought that he might get a bit annoyed at my naivety, but he always got back to me immediately, after every assignment, with thorough advice. In only five months, you’ve helped me realise my dream and made it attainable." Roelien Steenkamp, Travel Writing Course, November 2011 "It really was great fun, and very stimulating. Took me back to Varsity days and theological college with the pressure of deadlines for submission! Ginny was great! May well do another course! She was mature and sensitive, with a wonderful sense of humour! Amazingly prompt with her feedback and knows her course extremely well! A very worthwhile experience, pitched at a very practical level, not too academic, and extremely stimulating. Strongly recommended." Ray Horocks, Short Story Writing Course, November 2011 "I really enjoyed the course and found it challenging. At times it was hard to motivate myself but having regular assignments kept me focused and up to speed. I really enjoyed working with my tutor Paul Smith. His guidance was inspiring for me and he always came back with constructive criticsm and/or encouraging feedback. I found the course easily accessible, the notes were clear and I feel like I have some really useful tools in my belt with the course notes and tutor feedback I have received." Amanda Bidwell, Magazine Journalism Course, November 2011 "A very pleasant learning experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and am finding what I learned very useful. The course was well set-out and easy to fit in to my busy life. Overall, it made a very positive, good impression on me. I would recommend it to others. Jenny Lovemore, Basics of Creative Writing, November 2011 "Helen is a brilliant tutor who gave me the 'push' I needed to improve my writing. She sees a student's true potential, and knows just the right way to bring it to the fore. Thank you Helen! I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and have become a better writer for it. Having now completed two courses with the college, the reason I come back is for the manner in which the courses are taught, the excellent tutors and the comprehensive course material." Bronwyn Katzke, Basics of Creative Writing, November 2011 "I loved the course! My tutor, Alex, was absolutely amazing, with her advice, encouragement, feedback. I did not expect such thorough feedback, so to say the least I was pleasantly surprised. I can highly recommend it and will advise any candidate to enroll and experience the care one gets." Deks Dekenah, Write a Novel, October 2011 ![]() "I have gained a lot from the course. There are so many mistakes [in our writing] that we normally take for granted and I have learnt from my mistakes. Very good College; would recommend it to anyone." Ncikazi Ngqokwe, Basic Grammar Course, October 2011 "The course was very easy to follow, enjoyable and more importantly, it was fun. People see writing as boring; this course shows it is a whole new world and an adventure. Helen was lovely. Always full of encouragement and praise. She was also quick to point out any mistakes or weakness as well, but always done in an encouraging fashion, and then on top of that, she will tell you how to improve on it, or how to fix it. You cannot do anything but improve under this sort of tuition. I enjoyed this course immensely and will request Helen again as my Tutor should I do another writing course. I will be back for more!" Michael Taylor, Basics of Creative Writing Course, October 2011 "The Writers’ College provides an informative and quality course. Karen is an excellent tutor who is swift with her responses and provides objective, constructive criticism that helps steer you in the right direction. Karen offers a great course. Her notes are comprehensive and contain information about additional reading that allows one to explore the field in more depth. She has a professionally trained eye that points out where your script fails and succeeds. She is great tutor who is willing to be honest and answer any questions you have along the way. The Writers’ College is a professional college that leads the field in writing courses. I would recommend writers from any field to invest in what they have to offer, in particular the practical application of what you learn." Hannah Green, Scriptwriting Course, October 2011 "I've found the course very helpful in terms of my job as a communications officer. I feel more confident of my writing of press releases now. Laticia Pienaar, Press Release Writing Course, October 2011 "When I started the course I was not very confident in my writing. I knew I loved to do it but wasn't sure if it was any good. I felt that I could contact her for any queries I had. Her response was always quick. When I had feedback from her I always felt encouraged to do better. Helen was always available and I especially liked the one on one interaction. I will be back for more. :)" Patty Donaldson, Basics of Creative Writing, October 2011 "I was impressed with the amount of information about the industry and felt like I will now be able start my writing career. It is an excellent way to improve your writing skills in a way that suits your time and pocket." Claire Kivedo, Magazine Journalism Course, October 2011 "I thoroughly enjoyed it and am actually signing up for the journalism course - can only mean bigger and better things! Very professional and I loved this. Thanks. The professional way in which this course was managed was impressive and I am privileged to have completed this course through The Writer's College." Yvette Farinha, Write Better Newsletters, October 2011 "I felt the course was set at the right level, and had exactly the right content for me. The notes and exercises flowed well and enabled me to progress. I felt my tutor’s feedback was always right on the mark and focused on what was important. I have been impressed with all aspects of the Writers College. It's not always easy to know what you are getting with an online course, but I was very happy with my course. It appears to be very professionally staffed and run." Suzanne Main, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2011 "The course content was very relevant and provided an excellent overview of all the different aspects of web writing. Helen is very incisive in her evaluations, and assessments. She knew exactly when to put on the pressure or when to compliment. She turned my manuscript into a seamless story, honed and ready to print. It's a shame she won't be looking over my shoulder for the next one. An excellent, professional course that I would promote." Fred Robertson, Write a Children’s Book Course, September 2011 "I found the course very informative and relevant. It covered every aspect of travel writing and provided extra reading and tips that helped me. I spent many hours reading articles in the library and that gave me extra information that enhanced the course. I thoroughly enjoyed doing the course, and will recommend it to all. Yvonne van Dongen far exceeded the expectations I had of a tutor. Her feedback was prompt, and always honest. She was strict but her comments made sense. She always encouraged me to do better and strive for more. She is a tutor that excels at her job, and it was a privilege for me to benefit from her vast knowledge of travel writing. I want to add that I think the calibre of all your tutors is excellent. It is a very worthwhile course and expanded my knowledge vastly. I would love to do another course." Christine Jeffery, Travel Writing Course, September 2011 "The course was presented very professionally. Each module was clearly explained and very informative. It literally seemed to cover the most important aspects of writing a novel, and some other aspects that I had never thought of. I was pleasantly surprised by the input of my tutor. I found her comments really helpful, and constructive. I feel that with the ongoing commentary from the tutor throughout each module, I was able to stay focused on the different aspects (character-building; scene-setting etc). The module notes are a wonderful record which I can refer to at any time in the future as I continue to write. I am really glad that I took the plunge, and particularly that The Writers' College was the correct route to take. I have learnt a lot." Omri Pieterse, Grammar Skills Course, August 2011 The response time [of my tutor] was incredibly quick in general. Also appreciated the specifics of advice. E.g. contacts in the industry. I would love to do another course with the college, so hopefully next year you'll see my name again." Kim Govender, Magazine Journalism, September 2010 “I think you have waxed it, so to speak. The guidelines in your course are easy to understand and apply, and they really helped me to improve my writing. I’m thinking of doing another course with you guys, so my name will pop up on your screens sometime soon!” Waldo Ungerer, Basics of Creative Writing, September 2010 “This course covered a lot more than I expected and each assignment was a challenge for me – which was great. The notes and links supporting the learning were very good. Karen’s approach is both professional and friendly. Her knowledge in a new and ever changing medium is amazing and she made it seem attainable for me. It was a pleasure to have Karen as my tutor.” Chris Snelling, Writing for the Web, September 2010 “I have loved every minute of this course. My tutor was great , she always made great points about my work, constructive criticism, praise where it was due, and always pointed me in the right direction, which helped immensely. Keep doing what you’re doing, because it’s great.” Clemma Waddel, Write a Novel Course, August 2010 “My lecturer was Diane and I absolutely loved her. She was extremely motivating – I’m already having withdrawals. She is very insightful and I felt that she understood me and what I was trying to do with my manuscript. I loved working with her. Her feedback was always spot-on and she was very approachable. I think you guys are going an excellent job. The support is great.” Lisl McLachlan, Write a Novel, August 2010 “I was extremely happy with all the materials and course content. Susan is a wonderful lecturer: her feedback was always constructive, informative, kind and insightful. She is also very approachable, open and supportive. She is absolutely the best. I learnt more than I ever dreamed I would.” Theresa de Beer, Writing Coach Course, August 2010 “I loved doing this course with Helen. I really learnt a lot, especially about writing dialogue, which I have always found challenging. Helen really is so kind and wise with her praise and criticism - so necessary when dealing with the fragile egos of (wannabe) writers. She is a born teacher/mentor – can’t gush enough about her. Thank you for providing so much support to aspiring writers.” Shannon Willis, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2010 “I felt like I was learning from someone who is genuinely passionate about her subject. I have learned so much and am inspired to pursue it further.” Candice Nel, Copywriting Course, July 2010
“I have absolutely loved this course and have learnt so much about creative writing that I didn't know. I really enjoyed every moment of it. Helen is a great tutor, and yes, it has inspired me to keep writing.” Rachel Kiel-Taylor, Basics of Creative Writing Course, July 2010 “I found the course very relevant. It made the daunting task of completing a manuscript very approachable, moving in logical, achievable steps from beginning to middle and end. I found Helen’s feedback to be extremely relevant and useful. Though she didn’t tell me what to write, she steered me on the right path, always making sure I remembered who my audience was and that I had all the correct elements to keep a child reading, from a workable plot to good dialogue, valuable description and setting, and language at the correct level.” Hayley Leibowitz, Write a Children’s Book, July 2010 “I really enjoyed this course and the content was very helpful and applicable. I look forward to completing another course with you. Helen was very helpful and knowledgeable, her advice and feedback was brilliant; she showed me problems in my writing I had never known existed and which I have now been able to fix.” Chelsea Haith, Basics of Creative Writing, July 2010 “The course was indeed a valuable learning experience for me and I certainly did learn a lot from it. I have my degree in BA Journalism, but taking up the magazine writing course has specifically allowed me to gain a better understanding of the industry I want to work in.” Tal Halili, Magazine Journalism Course, July 2010 "Lisa made this entire experience such a pleasure for me. It takes a special kind of lecturer to be able to give critique and feedback that empowers, gives insight and builds confidence. She has this gift. Whenever my courage started crumbling, she was right there showing me the way. I always felt safe in her hands. She is a great asset to your college! I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with her. I feel the course was extremely thorough and practical. So many times one does a course and afterwards sit with a book full of facts and no clue as how to implement them. This is not the case with your course! The knowledge you impart is directly related to the field and can be used in practice! Never have I felt so supported and encouraged by a team." Michelle Nothling, Magazine Journalism Course, July 2010 "I thoroughly enjoyed the course and benefitted from the material, Ginny was an outstanding tutor.....P.S. You guys really do provide an outstanding service to us would-be writers." Varsh Patel, Short Story Writing Course, July 2010 ”Can’t say enough about my tutor really. Ginny was fantastic! I loved her prompt marking and chatty emails. Right from the word go, Ginny was more than friendly and very, very encouraging. This made logging on when waiting for the assignment results all the more exciting. We are still in touch, something I treasure very much. Every single one of my aspirations was met. I loved the discipline of working on the set assignments and also that my imagination was getting a workout. But what is really exciting is that all in the same week I got my course report and sold a story to a magazine!” Stephanie Attwood, Short Story Course, June 2010 “Thank you for the incredible knowledge and writing training as well as the confidence gained from the course. Karin was a wonderful lecturer. While she was very straight and strict, she was also very encouraging in her comments. I appreciated this. After the information gleaned on the course and the motivation from my tutor, I believe my articles will be published.” Jo Hedges, Magazine Journalism, June 2010
"The quality of the course I took was beyond what I ever expected and it was extremely worthwhile. I enjoyed working with Mandy and it was a brilliant course. The evaluations were excellent and always fair and justified. I appreciate the seriousness with which the course was handled and it made the process feel professional and worthwhile.
The course was evaluated in a very rigorous and professional way, which I found quite intimidating at first, as I did not expect such an in-depth assessment per module. I loved this aspect but it should be noted up front that the course is demanding and not something to breeze through and expect good results; because I think many people would expect to ‘just get by’ – however, people who are serious about writing must be told this is a serious writing course. As those who are just looking to add something to their CV will get quite a shock once the course gets rolling. I really felt I got back what I put in and that is what made this a very worthwhile course." Michael Rowlinson, Copywriting, June 2010
"Ginny was not just a teacher; she became my friend and confidant during this course and I will miss her dearly." Sana Patel, Short Story Writing, May 2010
"The course content is excellent as it provides very useful writing exercises but encourages you to write your novel at the same time. I like the fact that the emphasis is not on personal introspective analysis. Diane provided invaluable advice and support. I can honestly say that without the course and Diane's incredible support and input, my manuscript would not have been written. I have enjoyed the experience and I feel that my writing has improved substantially." Hazel Carlstein, Write a Novel Course, March 2010
"I cannot say enough in praise of the Write a Novel course, and of my tutor Charlotte Randall. When I started the course my confidence in my writing was low - Charlotte put such a lot into my assessments, told me exactly what I was doing wrong, how I could improve - her criticism was always fair and she seemed like a kindred spirit - really understanding what I was trying to do with my characters and with my overall novel. Her feedback was always detailed and prompt, she answered all my questions thoroughly and gave so much extra help and advice. I could not have asked for a better mentor and I will really miss her now that the course is over. Thank you Charlotte." Kathleen Jackson, Write a Novel Course, February 2010
"Helen Brain was an exceptional mentor and gave excellent feedback, encouragement and guidance throughout the course. Her responses were always prompt and detailed and her criticism constructive." Ariella Caira, Basics of Creative Writing, November 2009
